How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Following my intended use of the second transfer, I created a goal that I want to achieve. The objective is closely tied to the cost because, once I have money, I want to stock up on more inventory for my business so that I may sell to retailers at wholesale rates. I will be able to support my family as a result of having a reliable source of income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Without exception, GiveDirectly's assistance has given us financial power. The elderly and the young were handled with the utmost professionalism. The enrollment process was open because they visited every home. I haven't encountered anything improper in my interactions with the personnel up to this far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I decided to expand my tailoring business by adding more materials worth $176 to my shop after receiving the second transfer. I choose to do this to provide individuals the opportunity to purchase the materials from my shop in addition to sewing their clothes from the clothing materials they bring. For me, this has resulted in a sizable profit. Well, the business is growing and helps me support my family. I then paid $30 in school fees for my two elementary-aged kids. I also bought some food for my family because it was a dry season, and I kept the rest.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While grazing our family goats in the field, I received a message on my phone at around 4 pm. I did not haste to check since the phone was in my hands. Upon checking, the first glance of the eye hit the figure of $550. I became keener and I realized that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. My heart melted at thanksgiving for receiving such a huge amount of money at once. Due to the happiness that engulfed my heart, I could not wait for the sun to set so that I go to share the good news with my spouse.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since this was my first transfer, the only difference that I can testify of is that the money came at a time when I needed it most; and through it, I was able to start a tailoring business. This business will serve as a source of income and will enable me to cater to my family's needs. As I wait for the second transfer, I have already planned to buy some clothing materials to boost my business. By so doing, it will enable me to be independent and manage to facilitate the needs of my family without straining.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a tailor by profession, my knowledge was not in use due to poverty which did not allow me to get a sewing machine. When I withdrew the money, the priority was to get a sewing machine so that I start doing the job I love most. Therefore, I constructed a structure where I would place my sewing machine ready for the tailoring work. I cannot tell how much the structure cost but I am glad that I was able to complete it. After that, I bought the sewing machine for $150. I did this so that I could start tailoring work for my family's sustenance. Thereafter, I bought a modern standard bed for $70 because the one I had was very small. Since hunger has been knocking all along for the last three years because we have not harvested anything due to drought, I opted to use the remaining amount for the family's upkeep.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am excited about this new skill I just acquired and I want to put it into practice as soon as possible. My husband Patrick supports this initiative and has already put in efforts of building a structure for me to carry out my operations. According to our projections, we will need about $500 to build the structure and acquire a sowing machine and other materials. It feels good to be empowered and to receive support from the one I love. Once this is accomplished we will use the remaining amount to plaster our house, and make it more presentable.
What is the happiest part of your day?
September was a great month for me, after a whole year of hard work, and learning different things about tailoring I passed my exams and became a certified tailor. It was not easy having to juggle my studies, being a wife, and being a mother of two. I am happy I now have a skill I can use to earn a living.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I wish I could afford to buy a bed, have a place I can lay my head comfortably, and not expose my body to pain and fatigue. Ever since I got married, four years down the line I have not had the luxury of sleeping on one, we sleep on the floor and every morning I wake up tired with my back aching. How I wish this could improve and one day be able to afford a bed.
