How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am currently rearing livestock and making significant savings from my salon business after investing heavily in livestock with the intent of selling them later for a piece of land. In the coming year, I hope to raise enough money to purchase a plot of land, which will allow for more farming activities.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The changes that have occurred in our village in a short period of time since the arrival of GiveDirectly are remarkable. Everyone is thrilled to be a part of the program, which provided us with a free cash transfer that we could spend however we saw fit. Everything was clear from the first meeting in the village, where we had the opportunity to ask questions and gain a thorough understanding of the program. While responding to all of our questions, the field officers were professional and respectful of everyone's ideas. I hope that other villages receive the same treatment from the start of enrollment to the receipt of transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We have a quarter acre of land for our homestead and a small portion for our livestock. I have a young family of three, and providing a daily meal is not a big challenge right now. I am grateful for GiveDirectly's support, which gave us hope of purchasing another piece of land in the future as a result of our investment. I spent $400 of the second transfer on four weaned heifers at $100 each. The purchase of livestock for fattening and later sale is a long-term project that we intend to use to purchase additional land. I hope to purchase another half acre to allow for more space for other farming activities. I also used the remaining $130 to supplement my salary from the salon business I am currently running at a nearby college. I purchased food and clothing for the other two members of my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, My family and I were enjoying our evening meal together. I can recall that I heard my phone ringing but I chose to ignore it since we were still eating. when I was through, I reached out to where my phone was to confirm what the message was all about. Upon checking, I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because I knew that I would be able to achieve my goals in real-time. I then embarked on planning when I would cash out my transfer and how I would utilize it. I am indeed grateful for the support that empowered us financially.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have accomplished my dream of purchasing a dairy cow within a short period. This is a big relief because I would no longer worry about where I would get money of purchasing milk daily. Additionally, I started a goat rearing project and I am hopeful that I would be able to earn an extra income with it soon. I am forever grateful for the support that uplifted my life tremendously.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
One of the dreams that I had written down was for me to be able to purchase a dairy cow. We believe in taking white tea every morning thus I used to buy milk daily which is expensive because one litre sells at KES 60. I am a hairdresser and a mother of one. Upon receiving my initial transfer I used KES 34,000 on buying a dairy cow which I was unable to purchase before due to financial constraints since what I earn is little. Additionally, I started a goat rearing project where I used KES 10,000 on buying two goats. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and I have achieved a lot in a short period thus I am grateful.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will be of much importance to me. Currently we live in a 0.3 hactares piece of land which is very small for crop and animal farming. It has been always my wish to get money for the extension of this piece of land because my immediate is willing to sell to me a 0.2 hactares of land. As young couples of 1 year in marriage we still live in a single house and building another house is my wish. I am very optimistic that I will receive the transfer to enable me plan myself early.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last 6 months I have been given happiness by the peace, cooperation and unity amongst my neighbors. We have mutual coexistence and being a new member who has only stayed in the village for a year, I forsee great things coming my way. I am happy because my neighbors are of good will.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently my husband's job is not paying well. He is a security personnel in an urban area where he pays rent and the amount he earns is not sufficient for his needs and our needs back at home. I studied a beauty therapy course and so far I have not gotten neither a job opportunity nor capital to set up my own business. As a learned individual, I feel that my studies has never earned me any reward.
