How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
You see, I would wish to enroll in driving school. It's not just about learning to drive; it's about the opportunities it opens up. It would make me so happy to finally have that skill under my belt. And beyond that, I know that getting my driver's license could really help secure a better future for my kids and provide a stable income for my family once I find employment. Right now, I'm banking on selling charcoal and saving up little by little so that I can afford to enroll myself. It's been a dream of mine for a while, but financial constraints have always held me back. Nevertheless, I'm determined to make it happen.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly have good service for their recipients. I mean, you just call them up, and it doesn't cost a thing. Plus, they've got this project going where they don't ask for anything in return But, you know, there's always room for improvement. I feel nothing should be changed about there way of operation.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On receiving the cash transfer, I used $200, to boy some goats and chickens. It feels good knowing I have them, like a little safety net. My kids are still in preschool, so thinking about their future, it's a relief. Then, $80 went into my wife's tailoring classes. She had to quit because of money issues, but now she's back at it. I hope once she's done, she'll be able to work and help support us. With $150, I built a kitchen and a storage shed for our maize. It's a small step towards making things easier. I'm a rider, but the money I make barely covers food. My wife doesn't have a job, so it's all on me. But with these changes, I'm feeling a bit more hopeful about the future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Upon returning home in the late afternoon with my wife, following an exhausting day toiling on the farm in preparation for the impending rains, we finally took a moment to unwind. As my wife held my phone, its buzz brought forth a message that filled her with immense joy: GiveDirectly had graced us with a generous contribution. Passing the phone to me, I confirmed this delightful news, and together, we expressed profound gratitude and celebrated with joyous dancing. I am a boda boda rider, and this is our sole source of income. I bought the motorcycle on credit, and therefore, the little that I earn, i.e., approximately $25 a day, needs to cater for both our family needs and repaying the motorcycle loan, which is very difficult. I live with my wife and three children, who all look up to me for the provision of their needs. We live in a house that looks like a shack, which is not conducive for the little ones to live in. Building a house was my first project, and I finished paying off the loan. But now that we got the money from GiveDirectly, my first thought was providing my family with a decent house conducive to our little ones.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Obtaining a motorcycle on credit for business was a pivotal decision, despite the financial strain it imposed. Initially, earning around $25 daily, I struggled to balance loan repayments and essential family expenses, causing immense stress. The looming threat of repossession compounded this pressure, often leaving me mentally absent at home which was putting a strain in my family. Thanks to the support from GiveDirectly, I set aside a portion of the transfer to alleviate immediate family needs while diligently working towards clearing the loan. This assistance has been a tremendous relief, allowing me to be more present both physically and mentally at home and thus making my family happy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Utilizing $430 from the transfer, I embarked on constructing a proper house for my family as we were previously residing in a shack unsuitable for our children. Additionally, I allocated $35 to acquire seven chickens, envisioning the beginning of a poultry farming venture. I am hopeful that these chickens will multiply, potentially providing an avenue to support our family's future needs through their sale. The remaining portion of the transfer was dedicated to securing food provisions for my family's immediate sustenance.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of five members with three being children. The family lives in a one room shade that has a grass roof and it leaks during rain season. It serves both bedroom and kitchen. I do motorcycle business at the trading centre earning approximately $3 per day which caters for food only. My wife is a student at the nearby technical college. She trains as a tailor. I have been struggling paying school fees for her course since she has a fee structure of $240 per year. I will use $550 to build a two room house with iron sheets roof that will be spacious for the family. I will also use $300 to clear the school fees balance for the wife and also have a prepayment. The remaining amount will help me buy the sewing machine for the spouse so that once she is done with her course she can join work immediately.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In August 2023, My mother and the siblings visited my family . She offered a goat for the family to celebrate and it was a happy moment for me to reunite with my brothers who have been living away from the village. That was the happiest moment for me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints is the challenge I am currently facing in life. I do motorcycle business at the trading centre earning approximately $3 per day. This caters for food only and sometimes the family goes without food. This has affected me interms of development projects. My wife has enrolled in one of the technical colleges in the community but she has stopped due to lack of school fees . The family also lives in a structure that has holes and it is not spacious. It leaks during rain season.
