Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember vividly like yesterday. It was around 7 am I was heading to work when I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I proceed to work and when I went back home I inform my spouse and she was so happy too. We knew we would be in a position to purchase building materials and build a better and more spacious house for the. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Purchasing building materials is the biggest difference in my daily life since I have always wished to build a better house for my family. We live in a small house that could not host all my family members comfortably. The house is old and it's almost falling. I depend on small causal jobs and the amount of money that I get through this is so small and is only for household basic needs. I had no extra money to save so that I can purchase the building materials. I was so discouraged and stressed because my family was not feeling good living in that old house. Currently, I have purchased all the necessary materials. I am waiting for the second transfer to start the construction process. I know I would be able to build a better and more spacious house for my family. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards and given us hope to get better things.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent all the first transfer on purchasing building materials. I spent KES 20,000 on purchasing bricks, KES 19,000 on the sand, and the rest of the money on wires and steel metals. This has always been my wish to have a decent house. We live in a small old house which can fall anytime. We are so worried, especially during the rainy season. Currently, I have Al the material needed. I am waiting for the second transfer so that I can stay in the construction process. I am so grateful because my family will have a spacious and better house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house needs extensive repair. I built it three years ago using sticks and it can collapse any time from now given that the rainy season is around the corner. I work as a casual laborer on a construction site and whatever I earn is inadequate to feed, educate my two Kids and at the same time save and erect a new house. For this reason, I intend to use the first transfer to construct a two-bedroom muddy house one for my children and the other for me and my spouse, Thirty thousand Kenya shillings to purchase two dairy cows for milk consumption and for sell, the money that will be collected out of it will be my saving grace when there is an emergency. The remaining cash to clear school fees for my kids.
What is the happiest part of your day?
On eighth December 2021 was the happiest day of my life. I celebrated the first birthday of my son who was turning six. As it was the first birthday to be observed in my house it delighted me since I was beginning to fulfill my desire of commemorating my kid's birthdays.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge that I face is guaranteed job opportunities. As casual labor in construction sites, there is no assurance of getting a job every day, mainly this January. The last day I worked was two weeks ago guess what my family fed for all those days. My two kids have huge school arrears just yesterday they were sent home to get school fees. I feel miserable when my children miss classes concurrently go hungry for lack of food.
