How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because I now have a pair of oxen that I am keeping in my homestead. Initially, I used to hire those of my neighbors at a fee which was relatively very expensive. Therefore most of the time I couldn't afford to hire them and in that particular season, I ended up using my own hands which I could only manage to plough a small portion of my farm. I a now glad because I will be in a position of utilizing the whole farm with the help of the bulls to help to increase the yields. To add to that, I managed to construct a new spacious house. The initial one was in a poor state and I could not even afford to buy the materials for renovation. My children had to seek shelter from neighbours and friends and this was so stressful.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by making sure that they visited very needy households in my entire village. The organisation has brought a big impact into our lives and this can clearly be noticed on the assets that we currently own. All our children are now at school without being sent home regularly with the help of financial assistance. Therefore I do not see any part GiveDirectly failed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, nails, timber, and threads. This was for the construction of new houses becasue I wanted to relocate to my farm in the same village. Besides, the previous house was in .poor condition and very small. To add to that, I cleared school fees for my children who are in primary schools. In addition, I bought an ox plough at KES 8000. Lastly, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family that would at least take us to three weeks.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw an Mpesa notification in my phone early in the morning. I was curious to know who could have sent me the money. As I read the contents of the message, I came to understand that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was greatly overjoyed and celebrated with my family for this financial help.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I will now be ploughing using my own pair of oxen that I acquired through this transfer. I was previously hiring them at a fee during the planting season. This was expensive with a larger acreage hence I could not utilise my whole farm. I am glad that I will no longer be hiring from neighbours, instead I will be hiring to them at a fee thus earning an income. Having a pair of oxen is much convenient for early preparation and cultivation, thus they will largely boost my farming for a good harvest.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer on buying a pair of oxen to aid me in ploughing my farm. For the first time now, I will be using my own oxen to do my farming. I was previously hiring from neighbours which was costly. From now on, I will be hiring them to others and earn money during the planting season. I will also be doing early and timely preparations in order to get a good harvest. I spent the remaining amount on some shopping for my family. I bought new clothes and foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a casual laborer doing charcoal vending job. Despite this activity being very tiresome and requires a lot of time to do it earns me very minimal income of 2 dollars per day. My wish has been to have an alternative source of income but this has never materialized. My plan is to purchase oxen and ox-plow which will assist in farming as well as hiring them out to neighbors at a fee. I will invest the remaining amount to my 2 children educational needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a charcoal vendor, I usually spend my day moving around the village with my bicycle vending my charcoal this job left me exhausted. It's only in the evening that I can relax my body while sharing meals with my family. Hence, I consider it as the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is my biggest hardship. We receive long rains between April and May every year. During this time every household is working hard on their farms to have enough food produce. This is not my case since I am using the old method of farming which gives me a low harvest of 3 sucks that takes us two months. The remaining part of the year I am struggling in order to get enough food for the family of 12 members.
