How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After accomplishing the goal I had for the second transfer, I developed another goal which I will struggle to see it coming to pass too. This is an entrepreneurial goal of starting a shop business. I am targeting to sell fast-moving items such as foodstuff since people did not harvest anything substantial I am sure the business will flourish. So, if I get money this is the line of thought I am intending to follow.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I am seeing GiveDirectly as an enabling organization that uplifts people’s lives. The organization has created happiness, love, and harmony for the people in our society. Through the transfers which we received, people have embraced developmental ideas and both the family and societal bonds became tighter than before since no one envied the other.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, the main mission was to renovate my rental house which is my source of income. In that regard, I bought 15 bags of cement for KES 10200.00, one trip of building sand for 7000.00, and also used KES 12000.00 as labor charge for the person who was doing the renovation. Thereafter, I paid KES 16000.00 school fees for my two secondary school children who have been on and off school due to school fees. I also paid some school fee arrears that I had accumulated before. These arrears were making my children sometimes miss exams something that deprived both the children and I of our peace of mind.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As I was heading to the area chief’s for a community health workers meeting at around 10am I received a message in my phone. Being a pastor, I had just been asked to grace the meeting so as to offer a spiritual angle of view in their discussion. After confirming what the message is all about, I was exhilarated and my heart was overjoyed. I even prayed for the organization inwardly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, I was much stranded not knowing how I was going to retain my children in school. The situation they were passing through was sorrowful. I was an ever thinking man, to an extent of talking alone in the road. Currently, I can say I am now a free man. I used to talk alone due to the many thoughts I had but GiveDirectly came for my rescue. I sincerely appreciate the good deeds of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have 2 children who are in secondary school and the mode of paying was a big challenge for me. Upon withdrawing the money I set a set aside KES 19000.00 for their school fees. This money also caters for their meals. I did this after seeing that my children were starving in school for missing some meal cards which allow one to be served with some food during meal times.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I used to work in town as a welder but after my father died 5 years ago,I had to leave my job and come back home because the compound did not had an elder person to take care of the family. This total changed my life because I had to involve myself in casual jobs for survial. My dream has been to have a stable source of income. Receiving this transfer means attaining the desire. I am planning to invest KES 60,000 to start a business ( shop) in our village. This will generate income to my family of 11 members. In a day I can make proceeds of roughly 1000 shillings which is enough to cater for all the basic needs such as school fees. Apart from the business, I will use the remaining transfer to complete my business house which have tenants and this will be a source of income to.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month on August 2021, I had no little coin in my pocket and it is at the same time when my children were sent out of school. As I was looking for alternative ways to get money to take them back. I received a call that my children have received bursary from the county government which can cover for some months. This brought happiness to my life because I call it as a miracle because it came on the right side.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Unstable source of income is the biggest hardship I am experiencing currently. I depend on casual jobs which gives me KES 300 per day which is not enough to cater for all my needs such as school fees. This has made my 2 children who are in secondary school to stay home. Something that has made me undergo depression as a parent because I feel I am failing my responsibility.
