How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My primary aspiration centers around constructing a new house. The dwelling I currently reside in is in a state of disrepair, and it's become abundantly clear that I need a more permanent and secure abode. This endeavor is not just about building a house but also creating a haven of stability and comfort for my family and me. With unwavering determination, I aim to turn this dream into a tangible reality, ensuring that we have a safe and reliable place to call home—a sanctuary that will stand the test of time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, everything went remarkably well because of GiveDirectly's unconditional support. Thanks to their assistance, I was able to invest in livestock, a decision that has brought a significant positive change to my life. I am deeply thankful for the opportunity this support has provided, as it not only offers a source of income and sustenance but also a sense of security and hope for a brighter future. GiveDirectly's approach has truly made a difference, and I am immensely grateful for their contribution to my life and well-being.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used a portion of my recent cash transfer to invest in some livestock, specifically five goats, which cost me $225. This purchase was made with a future emergency fund in mind. In my experience, having some assets like these goats can be a financial lifesaver in case of unexpected medical or household expenses. I've always believed in the importance of being prepared for the unknown, and these goats serve as a kind of insurance policy for me and my spouse. Another significant portion of the transfer went towards something that brought immediate comfort and relief to our daily lives. I spent $100 on a new bed and mattress. Previously, I slept on a traditional bed made of ropes with mats that left me waking up with aches and pains. Now, I experience peaceful and comfortable nights. This simple upgrade has made a world of difference in our quality of life. With the remaining amount, I've been able to ensure a steady supply of food for my small family of two. I had been depending on a tiring charcoal business to make ends meet, and my spouse, who is getting older, couldn't contribute much. Being the primary breadwinner has its challenges, but the recent cash transfer has lightened the load, making it a little easier for us to maintain our daily needs. This newfound stability has brought a sense of security and comfort to our lives, which we deeply appreciate.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On that memorable day, the sun was beginning to set as I toiled on my farm, harvesting maize alongside my children. The sound of my ringing phone broke through the stillness of the afternoon. I was illiterate and eager to know the news, so I asked my children to check for me. To my astonishment and overwhelming joy, they announced that I had received an unconditional cash transfer from GiveDirectly. My heart leaped with gratitude and hope, for I knew that this unexpected blessing would finally fulfill my lifelong dream of owning livestock, particularly a pair of oxen.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Ever since I started receiving unconditional cash transfers from GiveDirectly, the biggest difference in my life has been the presence of bulls. These magnificent creatures have transformed my farming experience entirely, allowing me to prepare my land on time and in large quantities. The bountiful harvests I now reap are beyond what I ever imagined possible. Not only do the bulls benefit my own farm, but they have also opened up new opportunities for me to earn a living. By hiring out the bulls to my grateful neighbors at a fair rate of $25 per acre, I not only help them enhance their own crops but also secure a steady income for myself. The bulls have become more than just farming assistants; they are the key to a brighter and more prosperous future for me and my community.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When the unconditional cash transfer came into my life, it was like a ray of hope illuminating the path ahead. I knew exactly what I had to do to secure a better future for my family of four. With KES 50,000 in hand, I made a beeline for the livestock market, where I purchased two strong and sturdy bulls. These magnificent creatures would not only aid me in my agricultural endeavors, but I also saw an opportunity to hire them out to friends, creating a sustainable source of income for my household. It felt empowering to know that these bulls would not only support my family but also help others in the community, strengthening the bonds we shared. With the remaining KES 5,000, I turned my attention to the well-being of my loved ones. My children and I had long endured worn-out clothes that barely served their purpose. Now, the joy in their eyes as they donned new garments filled my heart with happiness. I understood the sacrifices my spouse made as a herdsman and the weight of being the sole breadwinner. There were days when meals were scarce due to his meager earnings. But now, with the bulls' potential income and the prospect of a thriving agricultural venture, I hoped to alleviate some of that burden and build a brighter future for us all.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Expanding my farming is what has been lingering in my mind for some time now. In every season, we struggle to till our land because our family oxen is no longer energetic. I have planned to own oxen that will help me till my land on time and hire it out to my neighbors on fee. This will equally be my source of income when it's hired. To ensure this comes to reality, I intend to spend $300 on this project. On the other hand, I will use the remaining amount to repair my house because its walls are collapsing from behind. Also, I will buy a modern bed and a mattress to replace my old roped bed. This will change my livelihood for the better, and hence, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In March of this year, our area received heavy showers of rain. This was a surprise to many people because it had taken a quite long time since we experience such rains. As a farmer, I got energized to take the challenge and work extra hard on my farm. With our combined efforts as a family, we managed to till our 6-acre piece of land. At the moment, the farm is full of green maize. This has brought about happiness in my family since we are soon expecting plenty of food in our household. What a happy life!
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity in my household is what has made life so difficult. This is because I live in a polygamous family with 13 members. Since my husband is unskilled, he lacks a decent job that can sustain our needs and thus, he engages himself in casual jobs. Considering the needs of our large family, getting our daily meals has been a problem or if luck is on our side, we survive on one meal a day. This situation has robbed away my joy and I am always hopeless in life. Hence, I consider this situation as my biggest challenge.
