How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My ambition is to invest more in farming because I believe that with proper management, it is more profitable than a retail shop with a small profit. As a result, I intend to save money from my business every month and to invest more in the got rearing where I will be able to exchange them for cows.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly did well was educating the community on the fair and transparent enrolment process. The field officer was polite and humble when they arrived at my house, which was not what I expected. I found no inefficiencies because everything the organization did, in my opinion, was re-marketable.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I decided to use $150 to expand my business by purchasing more inventory. This is because I knew it would boost my profit margin. Second, I paid $150 for five goats. Finally, I spent the remaining funds on farming. I am a farmer and a married shopkeeper. I am so pleased with what I have accomplished thus far; I believe that my life has been greatly influenced, for which I am grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I am not engaged at the farm I normally enjoy looking after my goats in the fields. The moment I received my transfer, I was at the field when I heard my phone ringing. On checking what the message was all about, I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and excited that I quickly rushed home to inform my wife of the good news that we had received. On reaching home I informed my family and they were all happy and grateful.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to accomplish my dreams in a short period. I was able to build a decent house for my family which I never thought that I would have any time soon due to financial constraints. Secondly, I boosted my poultry project which I am optimistic would attract more income. I am grateful to the organization for empowering us financially and for transforming our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a consistent farmer specialing in poultry farming, Married and blessed with one child. Upon the receipt of my initial transfer, my wife and I agreed to use our transfer on poultry farming where we used KES 10500. Additionally, we opted to build a decent house worth 30,000 for my family because the one that we had before was grass-thatched but we were unable to build a decent one due to financial constraints. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on buying two goats at KES 9000. I am grateful for the support that boosted my finances amazingly like never before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I married recently, and I have a small grads thatched house which is too small to accommodate my growing family. I plan to spend most of my transfers to build a decent two-roomed iron sheet house which will cost about KES 100,000 and the remaining KES 10,000 will be used to furnish the newly constructed house. This will enable us to usher our firstborn child into a decent comfortable house when she is born.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My wife is expecting our first baby and this has excited me so much. I am looking forward to being a dad in the next 4months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I did my KCSE examination in the year 2014 and I am unable to further my studies due to financial constraints. I have always desired to be a teacher but I am unable to join a college school to pursue my teaching desires but I was lucky to be employed as a casual teachers at a nearby school where I earn KES 7,000 per month which is not paid regularly. This has subjected me not being financial independent.
