How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For all those years, I have been sleeping under a very small house with an old roof that could be leak excessively. Because I rely on odd jobs with a meager income, I could not afford to even renovate it. Therefore after receiving my cash transfers, I opted to construct a new one. I am glad I because God has been awesome to me and I successfully managed to build it. Currently, I am sheltering with all my family members under one roof which were not attainable initially. They could seek shelter from friends, relatives, and even well-wishers which was not good at all, but then I had no alternative. I am extremely grateful to GiveDirectly because it brought joy and the lost hope into our lives. Also, I was able to purchase a big piece of land through the transfers and I will no longer have to lease those of my friends instead I will be saving the money to cater to other household needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is such a unique organization in the way its operating and treats us as the beneficiaries. Throughout the exercise from the first stage, there was no discrimination at all and everyone was enrolled freely and fairly. Also, each one of us was provided with mobile phones and made us even super excited becasue a big fraction of us was our first time handling such gadgets. It jas now ease communication among ourselves unlike before hereby we could travel from one end to the other to pass a message. Therefore, in my opinion, I do not see any part GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a piece of land at KES 30000. I have been yearning to own it for quite a long time because the previous one was very small and unproductive. Therefore in every planting season, I used to lease those of my friends which was very expensive. Also, I bought two goats that I am currently keeping in my homestead. I later paid the mason KES 4500 as the labour for the previous task I had assigned him. With the remaining amount, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and other household items that I was lacking.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am when I was from the latrine then I heard my mobile phone vibrating. On checking, I realised that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and started praising the lord as well.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life ever since GiveDirectly came into my life is that I now own goats. I am hopeful in life because I am sure I will achieve most of my goals through them. The fact that they reproduce twice a year and the offsprings mature faster makes me have all the assurance. Paying school fees for my children and meeting other basic needs on time will be much easier. This is because whenever I have any emergency I will sell some of the offpsings and sort out the matter.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on buying some building materials such as some pieces of iron sheets, building poles, nails and timber. I did all this for the purpose of constructing a new house since the previous one was in critical condition. In addition, I bought some goats as my living assets that I an lean on in the near future. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family that would take us to the next harvesting seasons.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is so small that it cannot accommodate my family of 4 comfortably. I share the single bedroom with my children and although they are small but I feel there is no privacy. Besides this, it is also incomplete and it has an open roof and an almost collapsing wall. This is a threat to our security and it is not fit for human shelter. Therefore, receiving this money means I will construct a bigger house, to fulfill my desire of enjoying the right to a better shelter.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening after such a long day of hustling to make a living. I always thank God for his protection throughout the day and I don't take it for granted.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is my biggest hardship. This is a result of the fact that I do not have a stable job. I depend mostly on casual jobs that are hard to come by and I earn 1000 shillings in a good month. This situation makes it difficult to cater for my family needs and it is a common scenario to go without food. Sometimes it is hard to raise even 5 shillings for over the counter pain killers in case someone falls sick.
