How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am now sheltering in a decent iron-roofed house which I managed to build through the transfer. I wasn't able to renovate my old house since I lacked the money to buy the materials to facilitate this. I am glad that I now have a new house to live in. I also have a pair of oxen that I am expecting to help me to plough my farm on time. I believe with the pair of oxen, I will productively plough my whole acreage for a better harvest.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has greatly uplifted our living standards by giving the money which in my opinion, it has done well. Many of us couldn't access better shelter and even providing for our families was difficult. This money empowered us to achieve our financial goals. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent KES 40000 of my second transfer on purchasing a pair of oxen. This pair of oxen will be helping me in ploughing my farm on time. I am expecting to get a good harvest now that I have the oxen to plough the whole of my acreage. I spent the remaining amount of the transfer on buying timber and nails to finish roofing my house which had not been completed.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I finally managed to embark on my goal of constructing a permanent house. My old house is in a bad state and the whole structure is almost collapsing. I don't know what I could have done if it were not for this organization. I don't think I could afford to buy the required materials to renovate it. Through the financial support from GiveDirectly, I have been able to purchase 35 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and other materials to facilitate the construction process. I have also been able to pay for labour and so far everything is running smoothly. This gives me hope that I will soon move into a more decent iron-roofed house after failing to achieve this for many years now.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was woken up by a message on my phone. Since I could not comprehend any of these messages, I woke up my helper who confirmed to me that GiveDirectly had finally sent my first transfer. I felt very happy, I couldn't get myself to sleep anymore. I stayed awake trying to figure out the best way I would spend the money. I couldn't wait for daybreak to withdraw my money. It was such a joyous moment.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I was living in a house that was badly damaged by winds. The roof was almost blown away and was loosely hanging on the lintel beam. This is when I decided to build a permanent house. I had started saving towards this project when Give Directly came and chose me as one of their beneficiaries. When I received my first transfer, we decided to use a larger portion of it to buy the necessary building materials. Currently, I am in the process of constructing a new house. It is progressing well and soon the construction process will be over within a few weeks. I also spent part of the money to do shopping. I bought enough food and a few clothes for my children among other household expenses

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I never went to school but it has always been my greatest desire to educate my children up to college level so that they can get better jobs and lead a more comfortable life unlike the one that I have been leading. So far, I have really struggled and 2 are past secondary school while 2 are still in primary. With this money, I will enrol my daughter who completed secondary school in 2014 for a teaching course that she greatly desires and also pay the fee arrears of her sister who is in form 2. With the rest of my transfer, I will invest in livestock keeping so that as they keep on reproducing , I will manage to sustain their education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I feel very happy in the morning when I wake up. After taking my breakfast, I normally feel very energetic to go to my farm where I tend to my plants now that it is raining before heading out to other people's farms where I work as a casual and get paid. The income enables me to buy for them food and also save some for their education.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is the biggest hardship that I face.Had I had money, I would have been able to enrol my daughter into college 5years ago when she completed school. I would have been spared the agony of seeing her waste so many years of her youth engaging in casual jobs just so that she can get some income to help me raise her siblings.
