How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Living in a home that has no toilet is very shameful and unhygienic. Not only that I am tired of going to the bush for nature calls but also I cannot withstand the shame of taking my visitors to a neighbor's toilet. Therefore, I am intending to construct one once I get some money. From the casual labor that I do, I have a saving plan that will enable me to build a pit latrine before this year ends.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The nicest aspect was that everyone received the same amount of money, regardless of their circumstances or background. Knowing that there was no prejudice or bias involved was wonderful. I was most amazed by how well everything was described. GiveDirectly didn't merely send out cash with no explanation or direction. They should be commended for how openly and plainly they expressed their aims and expectations. I appreciate the chance they gave me, and I hope they keep up the amazing work they are doing to empower and provide hope to as many people as possible without changing their methods.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
From the first transfer, I started constructing a three-room mud-walled house because the one I had was very small and congested. Since I used the transfer for other things as well, I was unable to complete the construction. When I got the second transfer, I prioritized completing the house. I bought roofing timbers, building poles, and rafters. Due to illiteracy, I cannot account for how much each item cost but I am grateful that I managed to complete the house and I am now living in a spacious house unlike before. I also paid some school fees for my two nephews who I take care of after abandoned by their parents. I am happy to see them back to school courtesy of GiveDirectly after staying out of school for a while due to school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I run a small business buying and selling livestock in the village on a temporary basis. I was on the way going to take goats from a neighbour for sale. At around 3:45 pm, I received a message alert on the phone. After checking, I could not believe it after seeing the message indicating that I had received the money from Givedirectly. At first, I doubted the message and had to go to my brother's house for him to confirm it. Happiness filled my heart after learning that I had received the transfers that we had eagerly waited for from the day we were enrolled.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a decent shelter is the biggest difference in my life. Currently, I am living in a spacious 2-roomed iron roofed house which is durable compared to the previous grass-thatched one. In addition, I was able to restart the goats keeping a future investment that would support me whenever I encounter financial challenges.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For many years, I have desired to own a decent shelter for myself. This is because I have been living in a small, grass-thatched house that was leaking and required frequent and costly maintenance. I spent the recent transfer to purchase the required building materials such as iron sheets, building poles and timber. At the moment, I am happy to reside in a nice house unlike before. In addition, I am planning to spend $80 to complete the dowry payment for my wife who had returned to her maternal home due to the pending dowry. I can not wait to see us reuniting again. Furthermore, I used $200 to restart goat rearing a reliable source of income by buying 4 goats. Three years ago, I was forced to stop livestock keeping after all my animals died due to chronic illness. Lastly, I used the remaining amount to purchase sufficient food for myself.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am living in a one-room house which act as the kitchen as well. The house is not spacious for me and most cases my clothes have smoke smell. I feel shameful whenever I mingle with colleagues and due to the smoke smell. I plan to build a two-room house with a separate kitchen. The house will cost $600 and the kitchen will cost $ 100 respectively. I will also buy 5 goats and 5 sheep as an investment. A goat cost $ 30 and a sheep cost $ 25. The investment will help me in the future in case of an emergency. I really appreciate Give directly program.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been jobless for the last three months. Yesterday I managed to get 8 bags of charcoal and sold it to the buyers. I was given my commission of $4. I managed to buy 2kg of maize flour and enjoyed my supper. The job I did yesterday brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I work as a broker between the charcoal buyers and those who prepare the charcoal in the forest. Recently, elephants came in our community looking for water and pasture. This is due to the drought in the national park. The existence of elephants has scared the charcoal burners to go in the forest. That has an effect on my work. I have a round three months without job now. That is the challenge I am facing.
