How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
On receiving the first transfer, I had a lot of plans in my mind that I felt were urgent and had to start and ensure their completion before exhausting the money. At the moment, I have a new goal to erect a fence all around my compound preferably using strong poles and barbed wire that I still have to buy. I have started sourcing the fencing poles and hope that I will be able to raise more money that can buy some rolls of barbed wire and even pay the labor charges during the fencing time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Everyone stepping into the village at the moment won't fail to ask what has brought the whole transformation - new houses erected, livestock, and also crop farming is a clear depiction that a lot was done by GiveDirectly. Our children are also doing great in school after the clearance of their such fees. I thank GD for this incomparable work that came with teachings that left everyone satisfied. I would encourage that people be given some chances to choose how they would wish to spend their money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had started the construction of a new house with part of the first transfer that I thought will complete the work but due to the other pressing needs, I had to pause the process and resume after receiving the second transfer. I spent KES 13500 on buying window frames, doors, and also paying the labor charges on the completion and furnishings of the remaining parts of the construction. I also had a piece of land that I had been paying and had to clear the remaining KES12000 after receiving the second transfer. I equipped my child who is currently in the University with a shopping worth KES 9000, purchased kitchenwares at KES 7000, foodstuff for my household worth KES 10000 that we are still using, and the remaining on school uniforms and clothing for my three children. I am a happy single mother of four at the moment, especially with a fully paid piece of land, the complete house that I constructed, and also having cleared all the school fees for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was from the canteen when I received a message notification on my phone and on checking it, my heart was filled with happiness as it was a Mpesa message indicating that I had received the promised money. I gave thanks to God and tried calling GiveDirectly so that I would express my gratitude but it was unfortunate that I was not able to maneuver through the IVR process. Receiving this money gave me hope that I would finally be able to fulfill my dream of building a more spacious house for my family and enjoy the privacy that other people have been enjoying.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am a single parent and meeting our needs on time has been a challenge to me due to lack of finances. Because of this, we had to live in a single room where I would sleep with my daughters after assembling all our belongings in one corner. I would arrive home at times from doing some casual work and needed to change clothes but I would not be able to when my sons are around. I am happy that I was able to build a more spacious house with the transfer and I am hoping that I will be moving into it very soon and be able to enjoy some privacy all the time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My son is in the university and needed a laptop for studying purposes and since I could not afford it despite receiving the transfer due to so many responsibilities, I decided to spend KES 16000 from the transfer to buy him a smartphone so that he will be using it instead of a laptop. We have been living in a small one-room house that could not accommodate us comfortably. Because of this, I always felt shy to welcome visitors to my home since I would always be forced to walk from one neighbor to another looking for a place where they can sleep. My transfer came in handy as I was able to use KES 29000 to build a more spacious house and I am happy that I was able to achieve this. Using the remaining KES 10000, I bought enough foodstuffs to last my family for some time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been working hard to build another house and therefore when I receive this money I will build an iron sheet house with KES 25000. I will also give my son who is currently in school KES 25000 to buy a laptop and have something for his upkeep. I will then buy a calf at KES 15000 and start myself a business of buying and selling cereals (Maize and Beans) with KES 20000. For the remaining KES 1500, I will use it to fence my compound.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening hours are my happiest part of the day, this time I have completed my household chores and already came from casual jobs. I am happy that I have achieved to put something on the table for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I depend on casual jobs to sustain my family, what I earn from this work is little for me to sustain the family. I normally earn about KES 100 per day, this is less compared to daily our daily needs.
