How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life would still be down economically. It would have taken us up to 10 years to finish building the house that we are currently building. The funds were so timely for us. We have another cow too, courtesy of GiveDirectly. We had an emaciated one that was no longer giving us milk. Things are now better because the GD cow gives us milk for consumption. We have new clothes and sufficient food as a family. My family looks healthier than before; this makes me happy as a parent. I am stress-free unlike before, I used to be awake all night due to anxiety for lack of funds even for food. Nowadays it seems the nights are shorter and daybreak reaches fast due to sound sleep and rest which I did not have before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my view, GiveDirectly does well to reduce poverty by sending us cash. I have never received such an amount of cash all my life. The highest value I have received is a thousand Kenyan shillings, which is a hundred times what GD cumulatively sent me! We are forever grateful. I do not see something that GD may not be doing well. The officers who came to our homes told us that we could spend the funds according to our needs. We felt good about this too.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the major part of the second transfer that GiveDirectly sent me to buy building materials for a semi-permanent house : cement and sand (I had the other materials prior to GD because we had this plan before but lacked the funds we needed). We are currently plastering the floor, soon to be finished. We had been living in a small earthen one so the one we are building is bigger and better. I also bought food and clothes for my family because we needed them.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
There have been great changes in my daily life. The biggest one is the availability of milk in my homestead. We used to buy milk daily but now the expense is no more and we even have some to sell. We bought the cow courtesy of GiveDirectly.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so excited when I received GiveDirectly transfer. I have never received funds like those in my life. It is rare for women in my area to be in charge of funds in their homesteads and it is a new dawn for us. We feel empowered. I was so happy and grateful to receive the transfer.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent the first transfer that I received from GiveDirectly to buy a cow that now gives us milk each day. We did not have milk before but now we do - enough for consumption and sale. I also bought food and clothes for us and bought building materials for building a house and we are currently building it. We felt we needed an additional house because we live in one house. Thank you for the funds.
