How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main goal is a simple one, as expressed by countless other parents. I wish nothing more than to offer my kids a better life. Hopefully, with the strides we have made thanks to the GiveDirectly transfers, we are a few steps closer to achieving that goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly excels at making dreams come true. Thanks to GiveDirectly, my kids are in a school that will challenge them mentally. I set up a business for my wife, giving her peace of mind and a chance to grow herself. Not to mention the self-respect and pride the funds gave us by allowing us to tackle our financial challenges freely and in a manner that we deemed fit for us. We are eternally thankful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The first thing on my agenda as soon as I received the transfers from GiveDirectly I quickly transferred my children from Katofeni Public School, to a private school by the name of Aloste Academy. This had been a life long dream of mine, though finances had never allowed me to be able to make it a reality. My wife had long wanted a business of her own, and having these funds at our disposal, allowed me to be able to set up a grocery store for her. I get her stock from Kilifi Market, which consists of mangoes, kales, eggplants, oranges and the likes. Prior to receiving the funds from GiveDirectly, I had been operating a bodaboda business, which at the time I was also still paying a loan on. The funds allowed me to boost my business by clearing $100, in my debt towards the loan for the motorbike. The bike, along with our 3 acre farm, are the only assets we have. The bike comes in handy as I also use to drop my kids to school. My eldest just joined grade 5, while my youngest is in Grade 3 now. Between the $10 to $25,a day, that my wife makes, and $1 to $10 I make via my bodaboda business, we will manage to pay the $60 and $40, each respectively, for our eldest and youngest in their new school. GiveDirectly allowed us to reset our lives and put both us and our kids on a different trajectory, aimed at bigger and better things for us all

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was on my normal Boda Boda work. It was around 5:45 pm when I heard my phone ringing. On checking what the message was all about, I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with happiness and joy. Since I was still on duty, I stopped whatever I was doing and headed home in happiness. On arrival, I broke the good news to my wife who was equally excited and happy. We then embarked on planning how we would utilise our transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am a fulfilled parent knowing that my children are all in a good school. I am assured that their performance would improve to a better one. Secondly, We have an extra source of income from the eatery business. This would mean that with my Boda Boda business and the eatery we will be able to support our children in their quest for better education. I am grateful for the tremendous support that uplifted our lives amazingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon the receipt of our initial transfer, My wife and I agreed to spend our money on starting an eatery business. I knew that it will be a source of extra income for our family thus boosting our finances. Therefore, we used KES 15,000 on the same. I am a Boda Boda rider, married and blessed with two children. We transferred our children from a public school that was underperforming to a better school in Ganze town where we used a sum of 30,000. And finally, the motorcycle that I am using was bought on hire purchase thus I used KES 10,000 in settling a debt. I am happy and grateful to have achieved a lot with the support that I got.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have had a lot financial challenges recently. My mud house collapsed and I was forced to move to a structure which I used for a business; which has already collapsed too. This means that I desperately need a house and source of income as well. I had started constructing a house but it has stalled due to financial problems. I am now glad since I will use 30,000 KES to continue with the construction. For the remaining 25,000 KES of the first transfer, I plan to start a business of selling second hand clothes in Ganze shopping center.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have a motorcycle taxi which I bought on credit. Despite the fact that I have not finished paying, I have managed to pay the debt one year successfully and I have four months to go. This motorcycle has helped me get money to buy food for my family. Bouncing back from closing down my business last year and being able to support my family makes me very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have tried several business which have not worked quite well. The last one was a food kiosk which I had to close down towards the end of last year. Financial struggles have been weighing me down. I currently do not have a stable source of income to take care of my family of four children. I currently operate a motorcycle taxi which I bought on credit which I am still repaying. It is really giving me a lot of pressure since business is not good. I am required to pay 427 KES every day.
