How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Depending on farming alone is not so reliable, therefore my goal would be for me to start a grocery business where I will be selling a variety of vegetables including the ones from my farm. To, realise this dream, I plan on saving at least $10 per month from selling vegetables. I believe this would be helpful and act as an additional source of income for our family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the support from GiveDirectly has been instrumental in lifting the living standards of people living in my community. The unconditional support made it easy for individuals to spend money on their needs. So far I did not witness any inefficiencies.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer, I thought of paying school fees for my two children who are in secondary school. This is because it was the most pressing issue at hand at that particular time because they had pending arrears thus, I used $200 in settling the fees. This was not possible because of our financial responsibilities and low-income streaming in. I am a consistent farmer and my husband is a tractor driver, together we are blessed with four children. Our children had been sleeping in a kitchen house which was smoky and stuffy, therefore we opted to build them a decent house worth $300. Lastly, we bought foodstuffs with the remaining amount. Indeed the support from GiveDirectly came a long way and we are grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was from the farm heading home after a long day of hard work in the sun. I heard my phone ringing and when I stopped to check, I realised that I had a text on my phone. On viewing the message, I confirmed that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because I knew that I would be able to spend my transfer on accomplishing my goals.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The financial support from GiveDirectly was a Godsent. Never had I imagined that at one point in life I would receive cash from anyone without paying it back. I lack words to express the immense joy and happiness that I feel. The biggest difference is that I was successfully able to start a goat rearing project and also managed to build a house for my son. which I was unable to accomplish before due to financial constraints.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Farming has been my only source of livelihood for a long time. When I received my initial transfer, I opted to start a goat rearing project where I used KES 17500 in acquiring five goats. I knew that I would be able to earn an extra income from the project. It is also easy to manage goats than other animals and again they are suitable for a semi-arid area. I am a mother of four children thus I used KES 15,000 in building a decent house where my children would sleep. This is because the main house was small and also culturally they are required to have their own space. Lastly, since the transfer was God-sent, I gave out KES 5000 as a tithe to the church. I was unable to accomplish all this before due to financial constraints but I am glad and grateful for the support that made it easier for me to attain my goals.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will enable me to improve my kitchen. The one that I have has an old roof that leaks and termites make it their home during the rainy season. I plan to use the money that I will receive on replacing the roof with iron sheets and cementing the floor to get rid of the termites. I plan also on settling debts that amount to KES 10,000 with part of the money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was happy when the government relaxed some of the measures that were put in place to contain Covid-19. I am now able to move around in search of food and jobs to support my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The unavailable sources of income have prompted me to borrow money to support my family. This has put me in so much debt that some of my assets may be repossessed if I do not hence my constant source of worry.
