How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I plan to join more support groups within my community, especially the one that is doing table banking. With this, I can expand my business and also cater for the pressing school fees needs of my children. I am optimistic that with determination and hard work, I would pull through eventually.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly empowered our community amazingly. The changes are noticeable all over the village. The unrestricted cash enabled us to accomplish our needs on time. People renovated their houses, others paid school fees for their children and many more developments. Though, I would request that in future the organization should consider all the members of a particular village even if they work in the township because they too needed the support to elevate their lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer, I thought of prioritizing the school fees of my son who had gotten admission to college. I, therefore, used the entire second transfer of $550 to enrol my son in a medical college to study clinical medicine. Seeing my son in college gives me joy and happiness because would not have been easy without the financial aid from GiveDirectly. I am a food vendor in the village and my husband is a security guard in the township. Together, we have five children. I am contented and happy with the support that uplifted our living standards and gave us hope for a better tomorrow.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 8:15 am and I had already gone out to work when I heard my phone ringing hence notifying me of a new message. I stopped to check it and I could not believe my eyes when I read that I had received KES 55000 in my mobile money account from GiveDirectly. I was so happy on seeing this and I now believed that what GiveDirectly had promised us was real. I thanked God for it because I now knew that we were going to be able to solve the problems that we had.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. This is because we managed to build boy's quarters for our boys where they can sleep and study. We also managed to increase the number of livestock that we own. The increased number of livestock will enable us to get more milk that we can sell and get money for paying school fees for our children. We can also sell a calf to raise school fees in the case when things get tough. Other than the above, our boy was able to apply for college with part of the transfer amount. We are thus grateful because all these only became possible due to the support from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent about KES 30000 of our recent transfer on building a boy's quarters for our two boys. We decided to do so because they didn't have a place of their own to sleep. They have thus been sleeping in a borrowed house. We have been meaning for a long time to build them a house of their own where they can sleep and study but we had not gotten the money needed to do so. I have a small grocery business while my husband is casually employed as a security guard. The money that we get is not much and most of it usually goes to the payment of school fees for our five children. Other than that, we also bought a cow at KES 20000. We decided to buy the cow so that it can help us in the future when it calves. We will be able to get milk that we can sell and get money for paying school fees for our children or we can sell a calf when it gets tough to get money. We also gave KES 2000 to our son who recently completed his secondary school studies to use in applying for a medical course. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying school uniforms for our three children who are in primary school and we bought some home clothes for them. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My firstborn child competed high school last year and is yet to join college due to financial challenges. Receiving this money will be a relief to me because I will be able to enroll him in a medical college for a two-year course. I am hopeful that once he completed the diploma, he will be able to get a job and assist me in educating his siblings and providing for other needs such as buying food for us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I received a small grant from an organization in February that helped me clear school arrears for my two children in primary school and they were able to sit for their end-of-term examination. This brought me joy because they will be able to join the next class together with the rest of the pupils in their classes.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The major challenge that I am currently facing is financial constraints. I have three children who are in primary and high school whose fees need to be clear and I am not able because of the unavailable source of income. This is strenuous to me and receiving this money will be a relief to me.
