How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
When I was enrolled in the program, I first developed a goal of completing to build a new spacious and durable house because the previous one had been washed off by rain on its sides. Upon accomplishing this goal, I came up with an additional goal to take my wife to a tailoring course. This would help her have her own source of income thus my household shall have diversified sources of income. In addition, I am planning to focus on my children's academics to ensure that they have what they are in need of to help them do well in their studies.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in ensuring that recipients are well informed about the program and the number of transfers they would be entitled to. This makes them be aware of the program as well as the criterion that it uses to enroll people. This has greatly helped in minimizing conflicts more so among those who never met the criterion. I am just grateful for all that GiveDirectly does.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 from my very most transfer to buy 25 iron sheets and nails for building a new permanent house. I had started building it before I was enrolled in GiveDirectly's program. The transfer has therefore helped in facilitating the construction process. It is almost completed and I hope I shall begin to use it next month. It has 5 bedrooms hence I have more rooms both for my children and my guests. The previous house was a temporary and a mud house which has become not only old but also weak to live in.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was on my way to the daily hustle when I heard a very loud from my mobile phone. Since I was a bit late I decided to ignore it because I was so sure that it was the random messages from Safaricom that are normally received every morning. Five minutes later, another message popped in and I was so curious and decided to check who it could be. Upon reading them out, I realized that it was a Mpesa message from the GiveDirectly. I had finally received the first transfers that I had patiently been waiting for. I was so excited because I knew finally I will be able to clear the college fees for my spouse.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the cash transfers, I have been able to clear the college fees for my spouse who was recently enrolled, pursuing a tailoring course. This has always been my joy seeing her achieve what she desired the most. I have been the family breadwinner and I have been a casual labourer which was a seasonal one. On a good day, I could earn KES 250, this income could barely meet the family's basic needs like food, fees among others. Having a family of six, I thought of a permanent solution that would bring all these troubles to come to an end. I took the initiative to send my spouse to college so that once she graduates and acquires the skills it will be easier for her to secure a job. This will bring a positive impact to my family at large because at least I will no longer have to strain considering she will also bring bringing food to the table. I am so grateful to Grateful for making it happen for we never thought she will ever graduate because of the challenges that we have been undergoing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as bricks, sand, and cement at KES 34000. This was purposely for the renovation of my house because it had holes all over and this was affecting my family's health. They have been in and out of hospital as a result. I later cleared school fees of KES 10000 for my wife who was just enrolled recently pursuing a tailoring course in the neighboring town. Seeing her advancing and getting more skills has always been my prayer. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for the family and other household needs like jerrycans and plastic chairs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will clear my wife's fees in her tailoring college.I will spend 20,000 KES to pay for her college fees, I will spend 60,000 KES to plaster and cement the whole of my house plus it's floor. I will spend 30,000 KES to uplift my wife's cloth business so that we can get a good profit. My wife is running a clothes business with a capital of 10,000 KES and if I add the capital, we will be getting a higher profit than what we earn currently of 2000 KES a month.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is during the morning when I see all of my family has woke up and everyone is well and ready to start the day. This is the happiest part of the day because everyone is well and we thank God for giving us another day in a good health.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship I have faced in life is the continuous drought which has persisted since I was young and this has inhibited and hindered development in my life.
