How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I was able to construct a decent iron roofed house for the family. Previously, I was seeking shelter with my two children after our small house collapsed due to the heavy rain two years ago. In addition, I was able to support the educational need of my 2 children by clearing their fee arrears, they are still in primary school and about will join secondary school next year. Lastly, I am sleeping on comfortable modern beddings, I no longer complain about back pains
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for helping the poor households in the village, particularly for enrolling me into the program. If it was not for the transfer my children would have drop out of school by now. In don't see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer to complete the construct of my two roomed house which I had started with my first transfer. I purchased 8 iron sheets at 850 each, a door for KES 4000 and paying labour charges KES 6,000. Previously, I was being sheltered by our neighbour with my two children after our small house collapsed due to the heavy rain two years ago. I also bought a bed and mattress for 12000. Before, I was using a traditional bed and old sacks as bedding which was not comfortable and hard to sleep on. I always felt backbone pain after waking up something that lowered my productivity at work. In addition, I used 3000 to clear the fee arrears of my children who are about to complete primary education. I spent part of the remaining amount to clear the debts on the cereal shop where I had been taking food stock on credit, I bought enough food with the remaining part of the transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw an Mpesa message in my phone early in the morning. When I checked the contents of the message, my heart was full of joy having received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I thanked for helping me financially.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to buy enough building materials to construct a new decent house. My previous house was in a bad state. It was full of cracks both sides, and whenever it rained, it would leak uncontrollable, forcing me to seek shelter from my neighbours at such time. I am now happy because through this transfer, I have been able to construct a new house for my family. Having a new house to makes it to be the biggest difference in my daily life because it would have taken a long time to achieve this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on purchasing building materials which include pieces of iron sheets, building poles and nails. I am building a new iron roofed house. My previous house was in a bad state and had collapsed on one side. It was leaking and not condusive for dwelling, I was forced to live in it since I did not have any money to renovate it. However, I am at peace now having built a new decent and iron roofed house. I also spent the remaining amount on paying school fees for my children and also buying foodstuffs and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband passed away and left me with young children, I struggled to feed them by doing some casual jobs like charcoal vending. The house he left us with fall down due to heavy rainfall and we tried to build a one roomed house atleast to get a place of resting after daily struggle. However, when I receive the money I will use 30,000 to build a 3 roomed house for my family, also 30,000 will be used to buy milking cows which will help me in any financial emergency, The remaining amount I will use to pay school fees for my children and also buying our daily meal.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a charcoal vendor, I usually move around selling charcoal, which becomes tiresome to me. Evening becomes the happiest part of my day because I feel relaxed and mostly spend time with my family eating our meals and sharing our daily experience.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been nursing my leg for long,I tried to visit different hospital for medication but the leg has not been cured. I was sent to a specialist but I was not able to visit him due to lack of finance. I consider financial instability to the biggest hardship I have faced in my life.
