What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been saving for a new house since the time I was enrolled in GiveDirectIy's program. The existing one is old, with a roof made of rusted iron sheets. As a result, when I received confirmation of my transfer, I reconsidered purchasing additional building materials because the ones I had were insufficient. The former house's roof had rusted with patches of holes, and it leaks heavily whenever it rains. When I see clouds gathering, I am always worried and uneasy because, while rain helps us grow crops, it disrupts my household arrangement plan. Heavy rains cause a mixed reaction to me. I am delighted the work is getting done, but there's a section of my roofing that I need to fix soon.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly does well by giving people cash without discrimination. I did not know that I would ever own a better house but through the transfers, I have the hopes of soon constructing a better house. I have already started some money for the construction. All thanks to the Give Directly money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I saved 3000 KES in my Mpesa account planning to add it to the coming transfers to purchase iron sheets for constructing a new house. The current house does not have a roof since it was blown off by the wind while part of the wall has fallen off. Whenever it rains I have to put containers all over the house and pour the water outside when they are full to prevent it from being flooded. I have not been able to construct a new house because I rely on subsistence farming and the produce can barely feed my family for half a year. I can not wait to construct a new house and finally have a peaceful sleep where I won't have to share a house with snakes and other insects. KES 1100 I spent on foodstuff, mostly dry ones for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to church for a praise and worship session. I had left my phone at home at that time. When I got home from church I checked my phone and to my surprise, I found out that I had received the transfer. I started ululating because I was very happy. My daughter heard me ululating and came by to inquire and I confirmed to her that I had received the transfer. She also told me she had received hers we both smiled and thanked God for everything.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The money has made a big difference in my life. I bought food using the money. Without the money, I would have slept hungry. I am grateful that I now have food that will last me for the next several weeks.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since the death of my husband, life has never been the same for me and my children. I used the savings I had to take my children to school and I am glad they all finished the form four level. All my children do not have well-paying jobs and they depend on manual jobs for their survival. I am getting old day by day. I also do not have a job. I depend heavily on my sons for my survival. When they earn something they send me money for my use. My house is currently not in a good situation. It is leaking and also falling apart. When I received the transfer I used it all in buying food. My food stock had finished and my sons had not sent me money. They told me they didn’t have money at the moment. To avoid sleeping hungry I spent it all on food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It is not easy to leave in a leaking house. One side of my house is almost falling and it gets worse during the rainy season. Since my husband passed on in 2016 I have not been able to repair the house. Receiving this money means a good living conditions for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Many people did not manage to see this month. Being that I am still alive with my family has brought me joy and happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Since my husband passed on in 2016, I was left to take care of four children. All my children still depend on me and since stopped doing my business of selling food in schools because I developed high blood pressure, I had to depend on my eldest son who depends on casual jobs. This situation forced my daughter to get married early before going to college. It saddens me knowing that there is little I can do to help them.
