How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intend to focus more on farming. Growing vegetables for home use and also selling the rest in the market. This will help substitute my husband’s salary. I have a lot of expectations for my farm's productivity this season and have been thinking of expanding my store to accommodate all that it has at the moment and also crop produce that I am yet to harvest.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, many households in the village appreciated the immense effort by GiveDirectly to alleviate them from poverty. All who received the transfer invested in what they needed most as it was made clear that it was our responsibility to make decisions on spending the cash transfers that we received.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother to six children, but only one is schooling at the moment. Her studies had been cut short because of fees arrears which had accumulated to $200. I was able to have it cleared after receiving the second transfer. Getting water from the river has been a struggle since it’s far away from where we stay and also costly. To curb this issue, we agreed with my husband to install tap water at home. Getting all the materials and a plumber to do the job we spent #200. Since I am a farmer, this has come in handy since I can now grow vegetables for both home use and sell the surplus to earn income. My husband who is a primary school teacher has been sorting the major bills as I take care of the minor ones. For the remaining amount of $130, I bought a few pieces of furniture for the house and food that would last us a couple of weeks.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the transfer message around 7 pm in the evening, I was cooking supper at that time and having a good time with my children. I heard my neighbours ululating that transfers had been sent. I checked my phone and to my surprise, I had also received my first transfer, I felt happy and thanked GiveDirectly for sending me the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
We are sometimes hit with a persistent water shortage in our region and at times I use a lot of money to buy water for domestic use. To curb this problem, I decided to install my own water tap using the transfer. I purchased the water pipes required and paid for the water meter. I will no longer be incurring any cost on the water once this project is complete, which makes the biggest difference in my daily life. Not only will I be using the water for domestic use but I will also be selling thus earning some money. I am also planning to do some irrigation on vegetables on my small farm as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent Ksh. 30000 on buying PVC pipes and installed a water tap on my homestead. I have desired to have my own water tap since I was paying dearly for water just for domestic usage. I am greatly relieved because having my own source of water will ensure that I have enough for domestic use and also sell to others and earn some cash. I am also contemplating of utilizing my small farm for irrigation by planting vegetables. In addition to this, I also spent Ksh. 13000 on buying two new doors and fixed them to my house. The previous ones were broken and I could not readily fix another since I could not afford to buy the materials required. I spent the remaining amount of the transfer on buying a bag of maize that could serve us for some weeks and ensure food is available daily.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Water scarcity in our area has been the main challenge and I have desired to encounter this menace. To solve this problem, I plan to spend my first transfer to buy some storage water tanks as well as install water pipes in my home. This will provide water for my household use and also to sell to the general public and earn income. The second transfer will help me to purchase 3 doors for my house which at the moment is open. Thus, this will change my livelihood, a transformation that I have desired for a long time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In March this year, My last born boy past passed his Primary school examination(KCPE) and secured a place in the national school. This brought me joy and happiness because he was the first child to get 371 marks. Besides, he was the one who led his fellow pupils in school.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is food insecurity. I am a housewife relying on my spouse who works as a teacher. The salary he earns is not enough for a family of 8 members. All of his wages are spent on school fees for our 3 children who are in secondary school. Due to this, it is difficult to put food on the table for the household. Sometimes, I have to borrow from relatives which is shameful.
