How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years and beyond, After confirming my wife's industry has grown enough to make more profit, I will advance my study further to fulfill my dream of becoming an engineer rather than doing construction casual labor, Once I achieve this, I will confidently take my children to bigger performing schools knowing that they will never lack school fees, but the fact that they never lack fees because I was struggling to pay with the small amount I use to get but their current school is not performing well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well because through them, I realized there are more opportunities that we couldn't have realized due to lack of funds, it has created employment in my village, people are constructing new houses, and that's my happiness because I can get employed on those construction sites. This is a dream that financial constraints hindered for many years. For the organization, its my wish if you can add us more transfers and extend your support of helping the needy people to achieve their dreams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For a long period, I used to do casual construction labor earning $8 per day which is not enough to cater all our basic needs. Upon receiving the transfer, I saw it as a perfect opportunity for me to save more money to start a new business of hairdressing for my wife who had been jobless for so long probably next year January 2024 and we came up with a decision to save all of our second transfer just to focus on that business knowing that when that business grows we will use the profit to settle our daily needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the message from GiveDirectly at 3:10 pm while I was at work. I was overwhelmed with happiness. It felt like a dream come true, a moment when my deepest aspirations were turning into reality. My immediate thought upon receiving this life-changing news was my wife's passion and talent for hairdressing. She had been working for someone else, utilizing her skills and creativity to make a living. However, I knew that her talent deserved a broader stage, and I wanted to provide her with the opportunity to shine on her own. Therefore, the first thing that came to my mind was to open a salon for my wife. I believed that this investment would empower her to become an independent business owner and also enable her to fully utilize her skills and creativity in the field she was passionate about. This decision was not just about creating a business, it was about fostering independence, unleashing potential, and supporting my wife's dreams. I wanted her to have the freedom to run her salon as she saw fit and to be in control of her own destiny. The transfers from GiveDirectly weren't just financial assistance, they were a catalyst for turning dreams into reality. They provided the means for my wife to embark on her entrepreneurial journey.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before the assistance from GiveDirectly, my financial situation was extremely challenging. My income was so limited that it was nearly impossible to save any money, and even meeting our basic needs was a constant struggle. The pressure of providing food and other necessities for my family weighed heavily on me, taking a toll on my emotional well-being. However, since receiving the transfers from GiveDirectly, there has been a shift in our financial stability. This support has allowed me to save a portion of the income I now earn from casual jobs. Having this ability to save, even in small amounts, has brought a sense of financial security and peace of mind that I hadn't experienced before. The relief from financial stress has had a positive impact on my economic well-being and also on my emotional state. I no longer feel overwhelmed by the constant struggle to meet basic needs, and this has improved my overall quality of life. I am truly grateful to GiveDirectly for stepping in and providing the support and relief my family and I desperately needed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I've made investments with the assistance I received from GiveDirectly, and it has greatly improved various aspects of my family's life. First, I allocated $150 to purchase new furniture. The old furniture we had was not only worn out but had also become uncomfortable to use. It was even damaging people's clothes when they sat on it. This upgrade was essential for providing a more comfortable and welcoming living environment for my family and the guests. Another important use of the funds was $50 to buy new school uniforms for my three children who are in primary school. The uniforms they had were in poor condition, tattered, and had lost their original color. It was crucial to ensure that they had proper uniforms to wear to school, as it contributes to their self-esteem and pride in their education. Additionally, I've diligently saved $350. This money is earmarked for setting up a salon business for my wife. Currently, she works for someone else, but with this financial preparation, she can transition to being an independent salon owner. This will offer her greater autonomy and control over her career and also enable her to fully utilize her skills and creativity in the hairdressing industry. These investments will have a lasting and positive impact on our family and we are immensely grateful for this opportunity.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
A job for my wife! Yes, I have always thought of having my wife close at home. Since at the moment she is employed in Kilifi, I have always assumed all her responsibilities at home. Imagine taking care of my 3 kids when my wife is away! It has been a life of challenges. Receiving this money means starting a salon business for my wife in our nearby town. This will guarantee us the opportunity to reunite and enhance our bond as a family. I estimate the cost of this business to be $300. This will also help us to have a reliable source of income because she currently earns $3 as a commission per day. On the other hand, I will save $300 as savings in our local bank to boost my shares. The remaining amount will cater to other basic needs such as repairing my house and also buying food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December last year, my wife completed her beauty training which placed her in a better position of decent work. In January, she secured a place in Kilifi town where she is working in a salon shop. Although her support has not been reliable, I am so happy to have someone who can help me in case I miss a job. For this reason, I consider this as what has ever put a smile on my face.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was born into a family of 7 children and immediately after completing my studies in secondary, I could not proceed to college due to the lack of money. This means I could not get the required basic skills to compete in the job market. This was the sole reason I ended up marrying early and having a family to take care of. Since I am a casual laborer, my job mostly earns me $150 per month. I usually spend this money on offsetting my bills and other household needs. Saving for my future has never been possible and this has worried me most as a parent. I always ask myself; "how will I support my 3 children in school"? I, therefore, consider the lack of a reliable source of income as my biggest challenge.
