How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to open a shop where I can sell maize which will enable me to earn an income to settle fees for my children. I am focusing on farming activities which will earn me the capital to start the business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly did well by enrolling all the households in my village. We appreciate your support and we are forever grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receipt of my second transfer, I spent KES 20,000 on the construction of a two-roomed house. I had a grass thatched house which used to leake during the rainy season. I am grateful since I now leave in a decent and spacious house. I also bought five chickens worth KES 2500 which will be of great help when I sell eggs I get the money to buy basic commodities in my household. I spent KES 1500 on buying a skyplast which I use to store water for use. With KES 8000, I bought furniture for my newly constructed house. I am happy since I have a place where visitors can sit when they pay a visit unlike before. With the remaining part of the money, I bought maize and clothes for my household members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was tending to my crops at the farm when I heard my phone ringing and vibrating loudly, Upon checking I saw a Mpesa notification message showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly, I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness, I knew that I will be able to buy a dairy cow that would relieve us from the daily expenses incurred in purchasing milk, I then called my husband to inform him of the wonderful news that came our way, words cannot express how happy he was, I am grateful to have received the support from GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I now have a dairy cow, which I am certain that I will be able to cut down on the daily cost of milk, therefore saving up some money which would be a very big relief on my side, secondly, I boosted my business by restocking my shop which I am hopeful that this would increase our daily income. Indeed this is a blessing from above, everything went on smoothly as I had planned am I am grateful for the support that has amazingly lifted my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I are maize vendors in the Village, I am a mother of five children, we make very little from our business hence buying milk daily for our children was costly, We could not afford to buy a cow due to our little income, therefore, we had no chose but to prioritize other basic needs, When the transfer came this was an opportunity for us to purchase a dairy of cow, I used KES 30,000 in buying a dairy cow, we also used a sum of KES20,000 in restocking our business that had gone down because we all depended on in our daily livelihood. We then used the remaining part of the transfer in buying foodstuff and clothes. I am happy for the support that lifted my life greatly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been feeling so guilty in my life because my children have had to discontinue their education due to lack of school fees. I am glad that Givedirectly have finally considered me to benefit from this program so that my children will continue with their education. Initially I had my hopes on farming so that I can educate them but for the past 5 years I have not harvested anything on my farm and we do not have any other income to help us meet all our needs as a family
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is always in the afternoon since this is the time I get paid for the casual jobs I usually do and it is at this time also I get to buy food for my family in a nearby market.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have had to do casual jobs ever since farming fortunes started dwindling 5 years ago and this has been the biggest hardship that I have faced in life.
