How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I would have not received the transfer from GiveDirectly in that I have used the transfer to cement my houses, seek for proper medication for my wife who had been unwell for a while as well as paying school fees for my children in secondary school. I would have not been able to do all these without GiveDirectly's transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is giving us unconditional cash transfer which has helped us to buy tanks, pay school fees and build descent houses. In my opinion, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer on paying school fees for my children who are currently enrolled in secondary schools since I believe when they are well educated, then they will be better and useful people in the society. When they learn they will be able develop themselves and this will make us, their parents, to be proud of them. I also spent part of the transfer to buy chairs to replace the broken ones, as a result my house looks good and I am no longer ashamed of welcoming visitors. I spent the rest to buy a second hand motorcycle in hire purchase which I will use for commercial purposes thus earn daily income not only for repaying it, but also to support my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life now is that I am able to comfortably pay school fees for my children. They used to be sent home most of the times because I could not afford to pay the arrears in time due to my low income. I have been surviving on casual work which has neither been sufficient nor consistent I have always struggled to settle the balance in time. When I received this transfer, I was able to settle the bigger part of the school arrears so that I reduce the financial burdens. Right now, I feel relieved because my children will not be sent home for the same when school re-opens next year.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I received this transfer, I was very happy. This is because it is the first time I received such amount of money in my life. The highest amount I have received in my life is 5000 KES when I was working as caretaker two years back.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer to pay for medical bills for my wife who had a growth in her nose which affected her breathing system. She used to really struggle to breathe during the rainy season and this would worry me a lot. I also used part of the transfer to buy cement and sand. Which I have already used to plaster my house since it was in a bad condition. The mud from the walls would fall off hence emitting dust which really affected my family. I used to spend a lot of money treating diseases caused by dust. I have saved the rest of the transfers to help pay for school fees when school re-open next year. I would not want my children to be sent home for the same next term.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money makes me so happy. I am going to save it till next year so that I can use it to enroll my daughter in secondary school. She will be seating for her Kenya primary certificate this year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am sleeping .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face is lack of employment. I never went to secondary school due to lack of fees and this has affected my abilities to get jobs that pay well so that I can take care of my family's needs like food, schooling and even shelter.
