How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My primary goal is to join college by early next year. After completing my secondary school exams last year, my parents were unable to afford the fees for my college education. Determined to support myself, I took a job as a housemaid in the nearest town. Although the salary is very low, my focus is to save enough money to help my mother raise my sibling and fund my own education. To realize my dream of attending college, I have been diligently saving money from the cash transfers I received and my earnings. So far, I have managed to save $80, though I estimate I’ll need around $200 to cover my tuition and other expenses. I am hopeful that, with continued effort, I will achieve this goal in the coming months. My ultimate dream is to graduate, secure a good job, and provide greater support for my family back home. My siblings, who are still in primary school, depend on me, and I want to ensure they have the opportunities I’ve worked so hard to create for myself.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I completed my secondary school education last year and have been dreaming of joining college early next year. To make this dream a reality, I made a promise to save a portion of the transfers I receive each month. Over the past three months, I managed to save $25 for this purpose. In addition to this, I am currently working as a housemaid and saving my salary to support my goal of joining college. I am eagerly looking forward to starting school, as I believe it will allow me to create a better future for my family. Recently, my mother fell ill with chest complications, so I gave her $20 to visit a therapist and undergo further checkups. I’m happy to see her improving day by day after receiving proper medication. I also used $18 to buy personal essentials like clothes, shoes, oil, and other items I had been lacking. With the remaining $30, I gave it to my mother to purchase food for my siblings at home. As the breadwinner in the family, since both my parents lack stable jobs, I feel responsible for ensuring our basic needs are met. I am incredibly grateful for this financial support, as it has restored the hope I lost many years ago.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a significant goal that I want to accomplish by early next year. After taking my secondary school exams last year, my parents couldn't afford to pay for my college education. I had to find a way to support myself, so I became a domestic worker. The salary is very low, but my aim is to earn enough money to help my mother raise my sibling. To achieve this, I've decided to save $2,000 each month from the transfers and return to school. I believe that with the support of the transfers and some help from my father, I will be able to attend college. My hope is to graduate, secure a good job, and support my family back home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After finishing secondary school, my parents couldn't afford to send me to college. As a result, I have been working as a domestic worker in a nearby town to earn a living. However, I have always dreamed of going to college to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to find better jobs in the future. To achieve this dream, I have been saving $20 each month from the transfers I receive. I am confident that by next year, I will be able to join a college. Once I graduate and secure a job, I will support my parents and help with my siblings' needs, including their school fees, as our financial situation is difficult. In addition to saving for college, I use $4 each month for personal expenses like buying soap, oils, and sanitary towels. I also give some of the remaining money to my mother to help support the family and buy food for everyone at home. Although my job doesn't pay well, I am determined to push on and achieve my goals.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am happy to share that I recently graduated from high school with the help of the monthly financial support I received. Prior to that, I faced disruptions, but since receiving the transfers, my high school education has been seamless, and I was able to pay my fees on time. My current goal is to enroll in college and pursue a teaching course in September of this year. I plan on saving my transfers every month so that I can easily pay for my tuition fees. I am hopeful that with the continued support, I will be able to achieve my career goals.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was enrolled in the cash transfer program while in high school, and it transformed my academic journey. Before then, my parents struggled to raise my school fees, and I often found myself being sent home due to lack of funds. My father, who is the family's breadwinner, does manual labor to support our family, while my mother is a housewife and does subsistence farming in the village. Navigating through high school would have been a challenge, especially since all my four siblings are also in school and depend on my father's income. Since I became a beneficiary of the program, it brought significant relief to our household. I am grateful that I was able to complete high school with the help of the monthly transfers. I was able to pay my fees on time, and I finally completed high school last year. My focus now is to join college in September and pursue a course in Early Childhood Education. To achieve this goal, I have decided to save my transfers and be able to enroll this year. I am currently working as a nanny, and I believe my income and savings will help me settle the fees come September. Apart from saving a portion of my recent transfers, I also spent $10 toward paying fees for my siblings, and they are now comfortable in school. I also spent $20 on buying new clothes for myself and some household necessities.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For my upcoming transfers, I have decided to allocate the funds towards purchasing new sets of clothing. This will not only enhance my appearance but also provide me with additional options beyond my current wardrobe. I am deeply appreciative of the financial support that has enabled me to cover my school fees over the past two years. This money will continue to be instrumental in supporting my education in the future as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After completing my high school education, I have returned home and am currently relying solely on my parents for support. My father works as a pharmacist while my mother engages in subsistence farming. In an effort to alleviate the financial burden on my father, who is responsible for paying school fees for me and my four siblings, I used $30 to contribute towards my own school fees. Furthermore, I recently made the decision to purchase a goat with the intention of allowing it to breed and multiply. My plan is to sell some of the offspring next year in order to generate funds that can be used to pay for my college tuition. Additionally, I allocated $28 to purchase food for my family members, ensuring that everyone has enough to eat. I am grateful that my family has not missed a single meal due to the financial support I am receiving from Give Directly. This assistance has significantly eased the financial strain on my parents and has allowed me to have some peace of mind.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to settle the remaining balance of my school fee debt that is owed to the institution. I am currently experiencing a sense of satisfaction as I have successfully diminished the substantial debt that I previously owed to my school. Beyond addressing my tuition obligations, I am also strategically aiming to make substantial investments in acquiring livestock. This forward-thinking decision holds immense potential as a future investment, considering the advantageous prospect of capitalizing on their multiplication for financial gain.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am in my final year of my secondary education at Mitangani Secondary School. I spent $30 of my July transfers towards the partial settlement of a substantial school fee debt that amounts to $785, owed to the institution. Additionally, I allocated $4 which was the remaining amount as personal spending during my time in school. The continuous financial assistance that I am fortunate to receive through these transfers holds immense value, as it has ensured my uninterrupted academic pursuit and allowed me to remain committed to my studies. The foundation of my education rests heavily on my father, who shoulders the responsibility of being our family's sole provider. Working as a pharmacist, his earnings are regrettably insufficient to adequately cover both my educational expenses and those of my five siblings. Among them, one brother is also in secondary school, while the remaining four are in primary education. My deliberate choice to allocate the funds towards settling my school fees was driven by my determination to sustain my learning journey and prevent any potential interruptions. Looking forward, my aspiration revolves around becoming a teacher once I successfully complete my studies, and it's reassuring that the financial backing from these transfers is playing a crucial role in bringing me closer to the realization of this cherished aspiration.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With the huge school fees balance of around KES.50000, my hope is to get money to help me clear the pending amount because I do not want to be sent home as others would be continuing with their studies. Therefore I plan to spend the transfers entirely on school fees believing that in the next few months, I shall have reduced it with a greater percentage to allow me study without much worries.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I thing GiveDirectly does everything well and there is nothing that they need to change. The process is okay and everything is perfect.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfers tat I received was of great help. I currently have a school fees balance of around KES. 50000 and paying or reducing it had been a great challenge due to the financial challenges within the family. The transfers that I have been receiving had been of so much help and also with the most recent one, I managed to pay KES. 2000 to reduce the fees and spent KES.1000; partly on transport to school and the other half as my school pocket money. With the remaining amount of KES. 470, I managed to buy myself a pair of sandals for school worth KES.200 and spent KES. 270 on food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I got a text message on my phone, I was at home studying and finishing up my homework. I was overjoyed and jumped around hysterically when I realized I had received my first transfers. I found it hard to believe. I shouted at the top of my lungs as I ran out of the house. My mother joined me in the rejoicing when I delivered the good news to her. I gave thanks to God for allowing me to receive the transfers at last after a prolonged wait.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has significantly improved my life, particularly by increasing my self-confidence. I used to walk around in torn clothes, which gave me a negative self-image. Right now, I can walk proudly through my village without worrying about retaliation from the locals. I now love myself more than I did before because of the new dress code.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My parents provide all of the financial support for my five siblings. While my father works as a shopkeeper selling prescription drugs in a pharmacy, my mother is unemployed. The enormous burden of providing for the family's needs is much greater than his meager earnings. I'm in my last year of secondary school and I owe a lot in school fees that my father can't afford to pay because he also has to pay for my other siblings' school fees. I spent $10 on clothes and $4 on a pair of shoes when I got my December transfers. The rest of my clothing was torn and worn out, leaving me with only three pairs. After spending more than a year wearing tattered clothing, I'm relieved that I now appear presentable and smart while wearing the clothing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this transfer from GiveDirectly means quality education for myself and my siblings. My mother has been relying on charcoal burning to educate us and with the low prices of charcoal, this is impossible. I am planning to use KES 30,000 to pay my school fees. My siblings too are struggling with schooling and this is really stressing my mother. I will use the balance to buy food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Storytelling is my hobby. I love it more whenever my cousins are around especially during the holidays. This makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the biggest challenge I am facing presently. In a week, we can go for three days without food. It pains me whenever I see my young siblings hungry.
