How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My high school grade was impressive, however, I never had the chance to further my studies due to financial constraints, My next goal is for me to enrol in a college, that is why I started a goat rearing project in which, I am hopeful that with the income I would be able to advance my Education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my village most of the residents were living in abject poverty, with the unconditional transfer from GiveDirectly most of them have improved their living standard to a better one, secondly, the rate of children dropping out of school due to school fees has reduced. I am so grateful for the support that empowered my people.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I believe that education is the key to a successful life, that is why I decided to use my second transfer to pay school fees for my wife so that she can finalise her high school, thus I used KES 26,000 to pay for her tuition fees, I then bought furniture at KES 8000, then lastly I bought foodstuffs and clothes for my family, I am a bodaboda rider with a child to take care of, I am grateful that the transfer has enabled me to achieve a lot in a short period.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am when I received my transfer, I was at home relaxing after I was done tending to the goats in the field when I heard my phone ringing, it never crossed my mind that it was the promised transfer, I picked my phone to check and that was when realized that I had received a huge amount of money from the organization, I was overwhelmed with joy, I immediately called my wife to inform the good news that we had received. I started planning on how I would spend the money, I knew that my plans would be realized because I already had the money at hand.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is the newly constructed house, spacious and decent, all this was not possible before because I didn't have a reliable source of income, receiving this money has been of great assistance to my family and me, in addition, our guest can comfortably come over because the house is spacious and it can now accommodate them, lastly I managed to clear fee arrears for my school-going children I am so happy and thankful that I was able to accomplish my dreams within a short period, I am grateful that GiveDirectly has lifted my living standard to a better and a higher level in my society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a motorcycle rider offering taxi services in and outside the village, When GiveDirectly promised us the unconditional transfer I saw it as an opportunity for me to upgrade the house that I was living in, it was in a bad shape but I was unable to build a decent one due to financial constraints. I embarked on planning on how I was going to spend, my wife and I agreed that we were going to build a decent house because the one that I had was old and small. therefore I used KES 35,000 in constructing a house, I then used KES in clearing the fee arrears. I am so thankful for the support that changed our lives.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better livelihood for my young family. For a long time, I have wanted to own a dairy cow, currently, I do not own any. I purchase milk costing me 10 dollars a month. This strains me a lot as I'm the sole provider earning at most 2 dollars a day, which is very little, considering other basic needs I have to meet. The rest of the amount I plan to build a better house. The house I currently live in is small, grass thatched, one roomed house which is uncomfortable since it serves both as the kitchen, sitting room and bedroom.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. At this time, I'm grateful to have seen a new day which to me is a sign of hope. I get to accomplish that days work. My normal day starts early and is packed with farm or motorbike activities.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship is financial constraints. I'm a motorbike rider on hire. I do not own my own motorbike meaning I have to hire one. Sometimes I do not get one to hire as we're also many doing this work and there are few motorbikes to hire. The money I earn from my motorbike business goes to food and other basic needs therefore I do not get to save up for family developments.
