How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For now, I have no any other new goal since my plan has been to raise the calf that I bought with the proceeds from the second transfer to it's maturity. On the contrary, I still have a dream of pursuing my college education now that GiveDirectly has helped me aquire my high school certificate after clearing KES 2100 the amount I owed the school. And for that reason, I am now saving for that purpose. Thank you GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is an organisation that brought about the real change within a short period of time through the lump sum cash transfer it gives to her beneficiaries and liked the way everything was done with humility. There is nothing that I can pin point which did not go well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on buying a young ox which will mature up to be a bull for ploughing. Besides, part of the transfer was used to pay dowry for my dear wife a process which would have taken me ages were it not for GiveDirectly' s cash transfer. To make ends meet, I have been vending charcoal whereas my wife is a stay at home person. Furthermore, I cleared my high school fees arrears of KES 2100 thus being able to aquire my ordinary level certificate which had been withheld due to arrears. I am glad and my gratitude goes to GiveDirectly for having considered me as a beneficiary. Currently, my plan is to save and hopefully join college in future. Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, It's was early in the morning when I saw a text message on my phone showing that I had received money from Segovia technology. Words cannot explain how happy I was, this was the best news that I had received that early morning. I then broke the good news to my equally happy wife. We then embarked on planning how we would spend our transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I have managed to construct a decent house for my family in a short period. I had always yearned for one but I was unable to realise it due to financial constraints. I am so grateful for the amazing transformation in our community. GiveDirectly has brought smiles to the faces of many people and impacted the lives of both the young and the old.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on the charcoal vending business to earn a living in the village. Though what I earn is not enough to cater for all my needs due to the current state of the economy in our country. Upon the receipt of my transfer, I used KES 48,000 in building a decent house for my family. This is because the house that I was living in before was small and old. I was unable to construct a new one due to financial constraints. I then used the remaining amount on medication and foodstuffs. I am so happy about the great milestone that I have accomplished in my life courtesy of GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The one bedroom house I am living in with my wife is in pathetic condition and unsafe for anyone to sleep inside. The situation worsens whenever it rains because the roof leaks and the wall are falling off. It has been a hell of an experience residing in it with spouse since I got married one year ago. Receiving this money would mean I build a new spacious 2 bedroom house which will cost 35000 KES. I will also buy a bed and mattress for 12000 KES because currently we do not have one.
As a motorcycle rider, my bike is also not in good condition and I solely depend on it so I plan to set aside 10000 KES to acquire a new motorbike on higher purchase which I believe will go along way in providing my family with basic needs such as food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After the short rains 2 months ago, the water pans have now enough water for the community and livestock. This has made me not spending more money in buying water as compared to last year when we experienced water shortages. This has helped me a lot in providing for the other basic needs especially food because last year most of the money was spent on buying water from the vendors. This has brought so much peace of mind to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Due to the drought we are experiencing in the region, we did not get any harvests from our farms and this means the little income I get from my motorcycle occupation is spent on the daily basic needs such as food and water. I hardly save any money and this has been a challenge because when one of my family members fall sick I can not afford to take her to the hospital for medication.
