How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I recently acquired a piece of land and with that space, build a structure that I can use to open a retail shop. With the motorbike business in motion, I can save and venture into this other business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It has given me hope to continue fighting. I can now support my child through his education without strain.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I work as a night guard in a government school near the village getting a salary of $1.5 a day. This money is not enough to take care of myself and my child. I separated from my wife two years ago but we are in touch because of my child. Every term I pay my child's school fees. Receiving this transfer has enabled me to buy a secondhand motorbike for $600. I plan to go for driving lessons, quit my job, and start a transportation business.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6pm and I was at the field grazing my livestock when I heard a phone vibration. I reached my phone from the pocket and when I checked the message, I didn't believe what I saw. It was a confirmation receipt of KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy because I never thought I would qualify. I knew the transfer would help me great with the family demands since I am currently jobless and my son depended on me for food and education. I remember separating with my wife about two years ago due to some misunderstanding, however, she left our son behind. I didn't hesitate to withdraw the transfer the following day since I had a number of plans to achieve using the transfer including adding more livestock.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference I have seen in my life since I started receiving the transfer was saving KES 21,000 from my first transfer to achieve my goal of starting a business. I am a father of one child and the entire family depends on me for the financial support. Due to lack of a sustainable source of income, supporting my family has remained a challenge. Therefore, I saw to it to be good to start saving so that I can venture into the business of riding a motorcycle. Furthermore, I bought two more cows worth KES 26,000, which I consider as a great achievement since they serve as a future security and investment. I am grateful for the support provide by GiveDirectly since the transfer brought a smile, happiness and peace into the family since we no longer lack food as family unlike before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of one child. I separated with my wife due to some misunderstanding few years ago. I currently doesn't have a stable source of income which has impacted my family negatively. When I received my first transfer, it was a relief. My first priority was to buy more livestock in need to improve my investment and source of security. I bought two cows totalling to KES 26,000. Due to the remote nature of the village, we hardly have electricity, therefore, I took solar power from Delight on credit which I made a first installment of KES 4500 from the transfer. I no longer struggle to charge my phone hence I am always online. I also bought food for the family using KES 3,000. Previously, we would struggle to make ends meet due to lack of enough food. Our health has improved greatly due to the well-balanced diet we have been taking. Furthermore, I bought my son and her step-brother school uniforms using KES 1200. The ones they used to wear was torn. This has build their self-esteem as they no longer walk around while hiding to their fellow classmates. I am also planning to start a business of motorcycle as a taxi driver by buying a second-hand motorcycle at KES 50,000. I have saved roughly KES 21,000 towards the same. I am planning to spend my next transfer in buying the motorcycle so that I can achieve my dream of having my own business and my own motorcycle.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am so worried about the condition of my house, the rains are here with us and I fear the walls may come falling. My priority is to buy one or two bags of cement and attend to this crisis before I start counting losses. Next will be to buy a nice bed and a mattress. I have always desired to sleep in a modern bed and get to enjoy my sleep just like everyone else.
It will also be prudent for me to think of investments, I will buy about six goats that are about 20,000 KES, and raise them, and when they have kids I will then exchange them for a cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
A week ago my two daughters who are in grades four and five called and requested I buy some exercise books for them. I did not have a single cent and I became anxious about where I would get the money. I quickly thought of my brother and decided to sell a load of wood I had. He gave me a 1000 KES and it was such a relief, I am happy I now have money to buy the books.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financially I am strained, I work as a casual watchman in a local government school. I earn about 3000 KES in a month. My salary comes from the county government and this is a challenge because I can go for about three months without a salary. This is frustrating because it is the only source of income I have. I have one child and I have a responsibility to her to cater to her education. There are days I go without food because I can not afford it.
