How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I was confused about how I will educate my children since I had no savings after losing my job. I am now glad for receiving my transfers I will be able to educate my child without any problem. Also, my family is staying in a decent shelter after completing roofing my house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly has done so well in sending me cash transfers since I was stranded on the issues of completing my house and education for my second child. I had already used all my savings to educate my first child who is from 2. I didn't see anything wrong that the organization should improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer to complete the construction of my house by purchasing 18 iron sheets, nails and timbers. I had begun the construction but it stopped due to lack of enough money. Also, I bought one cow at $120. I saved the remaining amount in my Mpesa account which is 180 dollars, I am planning to spend it in educating my 2 child who is about to join form 1 next month by doing some shopping and paying part of the school fees. This is because I lost my job and I don't have any savings to support my kid's educational needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a notification in my phone early in the morning. When I checked to confirm who the sender was, I could not contain the joy that filled my heart since GiveDirectly had sent the first transfer. I thanked them for their financial support which would uplift my living standard.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I was greatly troubled because my house was nearly collapsing and I was not financially stable to renovate it. I was worried because it was the season of heavy rains. The roof was dilapidated and I knew it would leak uncontrollable when it rains. I would have been forced me to seek help from neighbours had I not received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I have been able to renovate the roof after purchasing new iron sheets, timber and nails through this transfer. I am no longer worried now since its in a stable condition, which makes it to be the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a pair of oxen. Having a pair of oxen will help me to do my farming early and timely. I am assured of getting an increased harvest because I will be cultivating the whole acreage. In addition, I will be hiring the pair of oxen to my neighbours at a fee during the planting season and earn an income. Apart from oxen, I also bought some building materials such as iron sheets, timber, nails to renovate my house. It was in a bad state, full of cracks and nearly collapsing. I am happy that its now in a stable condition. I saved the remaining amount of money to enable me pay for my children's school fees. They are currently not in school due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I am at peace because when they resume, I will be ready to pay for their fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this mean will mean a lot to me. Because I will be able to pay my son's school fees debt of 50,000, which will enable him to study comfortable without being sent home everyday for school fees debt. In addition, I will use 30,000 shillings to buy 2 oxen for ploughing which will also bring income to assist in any financial emergency. The remaining amount will be used to buy our daily needs such as food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a charcoal vendor I usually spend my day moving around with my small bycicle selling the charcoal. Some days I end up getting no customers and becomes very tiresome to me. Evening becomes the happiest part of my day, because that is the time I feel relaxed after a busy day as well as interacting and narrating stories with my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship is financial problem. As a charcoal vendor I find it as a very difficult business during this Covid 19 period, because I am not getting my income as it used to be. Nowadays I am getting 2,000 shillings per month which is not enough to feed my 5 children as well as paying their school fees.
