How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to be able to start a new business. I have been doing motorcycle operation for quite sometime now and I think it's about time that I quit and start a new business. My goal is to open up a shop at a nearby centre in my home and run this business so as to be able to meet the needs of my family. The motorcycle operation has kept me far from my family for quite sometime since I am working from town yet my family stays back in the village. Right now I am saving some money from my job in preparation for this business. I hope to quit the motorcycle riding by next year. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for making it possible for me to think about this by providing support when I felt that life was so costly and cushioning me against tough economic situation then.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving us money unconditionality. This gave all of us an opportunity to spend the money in the ways that we thought were of great benefit to us. As for me, the money came at a time that my work had reallybbeen dealt a blow and I could hardly sustain my family and the needs of my family back at home. It came to boost my economic status and give me the dignity that I deserved as the head of my family. I am very grateful and will forever be fir the support that I received from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 10000 to prepare our farm and plant crops in it, used another KES 10000 to fence our compound. I also used KES 22000 to buy a heifer. All these investments were an effort put to make sure that we are more independent financially as a family and even food sufficient. The dairy cow that I bought is a long term investment that was an additional livestock to those that I already have. I do motorcycle operation in the city to earn a living and I thank God because this is work that has always helped me meet the needs of my family. I however have plans of starting my own business back at home and be close to my family because for far too long, I have been away from family. I am a father of two and look forward to being united with my family once again.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was almost 6 am and I had already gone out to work. I am a motorcycle taxi driver and at the time the message was being sent, I was busy riding taking a client to his destination. I saw it 10 minutes later when he had alighted and he paid for his fare via mobile money. I pulled out my phone from my pocket to check if the payment had reflected and wow! there was another SMS saying that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so excited about seeing this that I even got confused. I then called my wife immediately and I shared the good news with her. She was so happy too and we gave thanks to God because we now knew that the plans that we had were now going to be fulfilled.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer has brought into our lives is that the daily budget cost has been reduced since I no longer incur the cost of buying milk like before. As a result of this, I have managed to save some of the make from my business. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDiectly for supporting us. May God bless you.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 33000 of our recent transfer on buying another cow. We bought it because we didn't have a source of milk and hence we have been incurring the cost of buying some. The cow that we have been having is a heifer, it has not yet calved. We usually buy 2 liters every day at KES 50 per liter. This is quite expensive for us because we do not have stable sources of income. I have a motorcycle and I usually do the business of transporting people and goods from one place to another. The money that I make most of it usually goes to the purchase of food, essential household items, and daily milk. We have hence not been in a position to buy a lactating cow. We also took another KES 5000 and we used it to buy barbed wire for fencing our land. This way the cows will be restrained from going to the farm and destroying çrops. With the remaining transfer amount, we used it on buying clothes for the children and maize for our consumption.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will get another source of income through keeping a dairy cow. At the moment, I have only one that provides us with milk only for consumption. I, therefore, will buy another one, so that I can sell its milk and spend the money on food and sugar for my family. This will relieve me because I will be able to save money that I make from a motorcycle taxi business. I will spend about KES 40,000 on this and the rest will go to home improvement. I will buy a water tank for storing rainwater that we need for cooking and drinking at about KES 20,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last six months, I got my savings from a merry go round group that I have been participating in. I spent most of the money on fencing around my farm and paddocking it. As a result, my one cow started getting sufficient pasture and began producing more milk for my household. I can now save more in the group because I no longer spend the money I earn from my taxi on milk that I used to buy for the children at home. I am hopeful take good care of my family because of the savings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My motorcycle business in the capital City Nairobi is very tough. The most I can get after a whole day's work is about KES 500. This money is utilised on meeting my family's daily needs only. If I don't get another source of income, as my needs grow to include children school fees in the near future, I may not be able to meet all of them. This job has frustrated me already and I wish to start a business of livestock trading in a market near my village.
