How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No. I do not have any new additional goals that I did not have before receiving the transfers. One of my initial goals was to start up a poultry project. Since I have 3 children in college and 2 in secondary school, I ended up spending a bigger portion of my transfers on their school fees. The KES 20000 that I had left could only afford 15 chickens. I am, therefore, planning to raise more money so that I can expand my poultry project. Poultry reproduces faster to multiple young ones and if well taken care of then they can be highly profitable. The income from the project will be a huge boost in paying for my children's school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly is doing well by helping the low-income earners without any strings attached. Most people have improved their lives in various ways without having to worry about how to refund the money. For instance, those who did not have houses now have a roof over their head likewise, those who were not able to pay for school fees for their children now have their children back in school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have three children in college and two in secondary school. Raising their school fees has been challenging since the income I earn from farming can not afford their school fees. This left them with huge school fees balances and in most cases, they would be sent back home for school fees. When I received the second transfer, I used KES 23000 to clear the fee balance that they owed the school. I am glad about the first and second transfer because I was able to clear all the school fees balance for this year. they now have ample time for their studies and I believe they will improve in their class performance. Besides that, I am a small-scale farmer and I do not earn much from the farm produce. I, therefore, started a chicken rearing project at a cost of KES 20000. This catered for both the poultry and poultry house. My target is at least 100 chickens, unfortunately, I could only afford 15 of them, but I am working towards achieving 100 chickens by mid this year. The income from them will be a huge boost especially when it comes to paying for my children's school fees. A smaller portion of the money (KES 10000) I spent on both foodstuffs and clothes for my children so that they could replace the torn clothes that they had.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 a.m. when I received a message from GiveDirectly confirming the receipt of my first transfer. With great excitement, I had to inform my husband instantly as I could not withdraw without a plan. At that moment, my second-born child - currently in the university - had called asking for the school fees. He needed a total of KES48000 to be allowed to sit for the examinations. This was quite a stress for us before we received the support but the early morning text relieved me of that headache as it was an answer to our prayers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the transfer is the complete payment of school fees for my son. It has been extremely hard raising school fees for the other children and the elder son's school fees was a climax to our struggles since we had exhausted all the possibilities of enabling him to keep going in school. I am so much at ease at the moment, and thanking God for seeing us through the struggle.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfer message that filled every household member with joy, we had to first address the pressing need. At the top of our list was school fees payment for one out of the three sons in college. Currently, 7 children in our family are in school, and paying for their school fees has been a challenge to us especially now that we don't have a stable source of income. The small businesses I had been doing and the casual labor my husband is doing at the moment have been giving us less than KES10000 per month. After an agreement with my husband, I forwarded the money to him where he deposited KES48000 to the school account and came home with the receipt, we later sent to school with the additional KES2000 for my son's upkeep. With the remaining amount, we saw it good to refill our food baskets, as we had been buying maize in small quantities but this time obtained a full sack at KES3600 and used the remaining in buying other household goods. I am glad that we received this money when we needed it the most. My son also appreciated the support so much as it gave him a chance to sit for the exams that he was almost losing hope on.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am having three children pursuing their education in various Colleges ( Voi University, Bandari college and Chebalungu TTI). This has given me sleepless nights and a big struggle in paying school fees. I will use KES 50000 of this money to clear school fees areas. My earlier enterprise of poultry farming collapsed as a result of a lack of finance since I did Channel all that we earn in paying school fees. This money allows me to rejuvenate my poultry farming with KES 30000 and since I have no job it will enable me to earn income through the sale of eggs and chicken. For the remaining KES 20000, I will use it to buy food and basic needs for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of the day is the morning hours after waking up. This is the time I am energetic and ready to face another new day and work to provide for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Paying school fees for my three children in college and two children in Secondary School has been a big hardship I am going through. This has been expensive for us and consumes all our family income. Food shortage has also been another challenge for us from the time maize production failed in our area as a result of maize disease.
