How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I usually buy beans from farmers and sell them to people when they're out of season. Due to the state of my previous granary, I had to buy them in small quantities to avoid incurring losses when it gets rained on. I am glad that I can now start buying them in large quantities and earn more after selling them since I have a more decent and conducive structure to use in storing them for a long time without getting spoiled.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
People in my village were not able to build decent houses due to financial constraints that we've been facing. With the financial aid that we recently received, we were able to build better houses, buy dairy cows and dress well. This has given an upper hand to GiveDircetly when compared with other organizations since they decided to give people money instead of coming to do a certain project for someone. I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I built a granary for my family using KES 20000 after receiving my second transfer by buying 15 pieces of iron sheets, nails, timber and paid for labor. We settled on this since the one we had was old and its roof had started leaking during the rainy season. Because of this, my grains usually get spoiled and I would incur a lot of losses. In addition, I spent KES 8000 to buy two goats so that it will be a reminder of GiveDirectlys good deeds in our lives. I will be selling the offspring when it reproduces and use the money to cater to our financial needs. Also, I bought 6 six plastic chairs at KES 4000 so that visitors who are not comfortable being ushered inside the house can sit on them outside while we are catching up and used the remaining KES 17000 food and clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 10 am when I was taking care of my cows. I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I do not know how to read. I called my daughter to check it out for me. I felt so happy when she informed me that it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I have never received such amount of money before. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. This has always been my dream. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has supported us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a heifer. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I spend on casual jobs and sells cereals. This earns me some income. The money that I would get was not enough to buy a dairy cow. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but it was not possible because I didn't had the money. Sometimes we could go without milk because I had no money. This was so demoralizing and very stressful. When I received the transfer I felt so happy. Currently I have a heifer, I know in the next few months I will get enough milk when it reproduce. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk. I will be in a position to save some money. I will sell the extra milk to meet other basic household items. I am so happy because this has always been my dream. GiveDirectly has changed our living standards and enable us to own assets.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 to buy a heifer. I will be in a position to cut the cost of buying milk when it reproduce in the next few months. I will save the money that I would have used on milk for other basic household items. I bought cloths and food for the family. The rest of the money I bought materials ready to build a store. This is where I will be storing my farm produce. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a healthy life for me. I am 61 years old and I only depend on milk and Natural vegetables for food. Since I don't have a cow and buying milk daily is expensive, I'm planning to buy a dairy cow Worth KES 40,000. With the cow, I will get enough milk to drink and sell the surplus. The rest of the amount I will use to buy furniture for my house and foodstuffs for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time I get to rest after spending all day in the farm with my husband.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship have faced is poverty. Depending on farming has been hard because of prolonged drought. This has resort to Casual jobs and are hard to find since am an old woman. The little I get from farming is barely enough to satisfy all needs like food, good shelter and clothing.
