How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have two new goals which include, purchasing modern bedding and renovating the house. The previous beddings are not comfortable nor long-lasting therefore I have been thinking of getting the modern ones so that they can serve me for a longer duration and offer comfort. Also, I feel there is a need to renovate my house because the walls are not stable enough and I am worried about the winter season which is just around the corner.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job in my entire region by ensuring that they visited every household. They did not discriminate against anyone regardless of age, tribe or even region throughout their stay in my village. Also being given equal opportunity to choose what to purchase was the best for me. I therefore can't single out anything that deserves a change so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying iron sheets which cost almost KES 25000, and the labour charges of KES 6000 respectively. This was purposefully for the completion of my rental house which was under construction in the nearby town centre. This will be the main long-term investment that I will readily be relying on in case of any financial difficulties. I also opted for this type of project majorly for my children's education journey since for now they are still in junior schools. Also, I bought a new traditional bed, two mats and bedsheets. I now feel relieved because I have been sleeping on the floor for years and I have regularly been complaining of back pains and attacks from harmful insects which resulted in skin diseases. I am now healthier and joyful about this transformation. To add to that I started a new business( hotel) and a grocery in the neighbouring village. I am so happy that I am now earning a living unlike before whereby my spouse and I have been jobless. Also bought five goats at KES 15000 which now serve as the assets to readily depend on at any time considering they reproduce and mature very fast. With the remaining cash, I had to buy food and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The day I received the transfers, I had gone to the farm early in the morning because I had several activities that I had to do. I remember hearing a message notification but that didn't bother me because I thought it was just normal promo codes I was used to receiving everyday. When I got back home in the afternoon, I found my neighbours excited about receiving the transfers and one of them asked me if I had received mine. That's when I remembered of the message notification that I heard in the farm. When I opened the messager, I found out that I had received the transfers and joined the rest of my neighbourhood in celebrating.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I nolonger pay rent for my business and I have been using the money which could have been used in paying rent to boost my business. I nolonger have debts and I can provide my family with basic necessities without struggle. Having the money to buy food and cater for basic necessities has allowed me to concentrate on expanding my business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being married as a second wife to my husband, I had to some point bear all the responsibility of my seven children because he became unproductive due to his old age. I have been operating a local restaurant to earn living and sometimes, the business becomes tough since I have to balance between paying school fees and provide basic necessities for my children, paying rent for restaurant and ensuring that the business keeps running. I have for the longest time thought of building my own restaurant so that the money which I have been using to pay rent could be used to boost the business. I have not been able to achieve this due to financial incapability but when I was enrolled in the program, I saw this as good opportunity to go for what I have been dreaming of. I spend KES 30000 to build a temporary building where I will be operating my local restaurant, KES 2000 to pay debt that I had and I have been spending the balance to provide basic needs to my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is becoming smaller because of my large family of seven children. It is not in a good condition as well since the roof is rusty and open on one end. The doors are also missing. This will therefore be my first priority and I will use 25,000 KES to make repairs and extend one extra room. I will also buy a bed and a mattress for my children to sleep comfortably. They normally sleep on the floor. I will invest the remaining 15,000 KES of the transfers in goat farming. I have a few that that have been really helpful financially and adding a few more will be a big boost.
What is the happiest part of your day?
With the tough economic times taking a toll on my life, Give Directly's presence in this area has been music to my ears. This is the something that has brought joy and hope to my life. My hope of an improved standard of living is now back.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As a farmer, the rains have really been a let down. Depending on the rains for good harvest so that I can feed my children and sell produce is a thing of the past. This is due to the frequent droughts. The crops I had planted in December have dried up. This has made me drown more into poverty because my children need food and education and I do not have an alternative source of income.
