How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to be able to buy a dairy cow. I have one dairy cow that I bought with the first transfer and buying an additional one will ensure that we have constant supply of milk in our household and be able to meet our most immediate needs like the cost of buying food and even meet the cost of emergency needs like paying school fees for ouir children. I am a single mother of seven and relying on casual work to raise money for food and all those needs is sometimes overwhelming. Furthermore, dairy cows are an investment that will multiply over time. I am hopeful that I will be able to get money and implement this soon enough.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well in giving us education on where the money was from and ways in which we were free to use the money. This demistified some of the misconseptions that villagers had about the money and made everyone embrace the program. I belive it is because of these meetings too that people were liberated to choose how best they wanted the money to benefit them and this too contributed a lot to the good works that we now are witnessing in our village. On the other hand I did not find anything that I thought GiveDirectly could improve or do better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used almost KES 40000 to buy building materials for our new house and to help in putting up the building. As we speak today, myself and a group of women from the village are helping me erect the walls of this said house. Tje remaining amount of say KES 10000 was used to pay school fees for my two children who are in their respective secondary schools. The money came at a time when they had been sent home severally for school fees until one of them was almost giving up in her studies. I told her to hang on as we wait for any help from anyone and I am happy that that help came from GiveDirectly. I am now so much relaxed knowing better that she will be able to clear her form four without having to be sent home again. To me GiveDirectly was God sent and I cannot be grateful enough for the help they gave.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6pm when I switched on my phone. I had taken it for charging. Immediately I got a message on my phone. The message indicted that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. I stopped whatever I was doing to celebrate. I immediately inform my family members and ended with lots of joy and happiness. I knew I would be in a position to purchase a dairy cow which had always been my wish. I went and withdraw the money the following day at the shopping center not far from home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Buying a dairy cow is the biggest difference in my daily life. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I do not have a continuous source of income. We depend on small causal jobs in the village. I cultivate people's farms to earn some money. Whenever there is no causal jobs it's so hard for me since I do not have any other option. My neighbor had given me his cow to milk for some time, unfortunately he had an emergency and he sold it. It left us struggling to get money to buy milk. I have other basic household items and meeting All this was a challenge. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy. I bought a dairy cow and this has given me hope that tomorrow gonna be better. I will be able to get enough milk and even sell the surplus milk to earn an income to meet household basic. I am so grateful and I have devoted much of my time on this dairy keeping project. GiveDirectly has given us hope and changed our living standards. We are so grateful for the support and we look forward making our lives better each day.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 28,000 to purchase a heifer. The cow is around six months incalf. This will enable me to cut the daily cost of buying milk which is so costly. I am so grateful because I know in the next few months my family will get enough milk. I bought a sofa set seat, paid part of the school fees for my children and the rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I feel so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly fulfilled their promise and improved our living standards.
