How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Purchasing a tea plucking machine is the new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer. I usually do a cause job of plucking tea. This was so tiresome and time-consuming when I received the transfer I decided to purchase a machine. Currently, my work is easy in that I have a plucking machine. The volume of the work that I do has increased as well as the income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by conducting training and giving money to the poor in the community to build a better house and to pay school fees for their children. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 34,000 on purchasing a tea plucking machine. I had always wished to own one because I do tea plucking in one of the tea-growing counties. This is so efficient and effective, it saves time and increases the volume of work. This casual job of tea picking is what earns me some income to meet all my daily household items including supporting my family. Now that I have bought the machine the volume of my work has increased compared to previous days. I get a higher income as a result of my work. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own the machine. This could have taken quite some time to own it. I spent the rest of the money on cultivating my farm and planting maize. I have hope that I will get a good harvest this season because I was able to plant at right time. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards to be much better than before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy when I first saw the confirmation message from GiveDirectly that morning when every other person in the village was receiving the first transfer. I was thankful that a chance to get to the hospital after a serious fracture I had on my knee had finally presented itself. This was my hope to finally walk normally again as the only challenge I had been facing was a lack of finances. My mother who was with me at home at that moment was happy as well even though she had not received her own.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the huge investment in livestock after receiving my first transfer. Buying eight sheep is a great deal of a project to me in that it has raised my hopes of building a big flock in the future that will as well help in settling other financial obligations when they arise. I am also glad that there are enough grazing fields around and will not be struggling a lot in finding them feeds.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the fracture I had been struggling with in the past six months, I have been praying all night that God would open a way for me to be able to access the treatment. I had a serious accident that left me with a serious knock on the knee making me unable to walk nor do anything at all. On receiving this transfer, it was a relief and a renewed hope for me. I visited the hospital the following morning to see the specialist who unfortunately was not able to do anything since it's been a long time since I got the fracture. I was so disappointed to be told that a fracture needed to have been treated immediately after I got it but I had no money then. I paid the consultation charges and promised myself to still try another hospital the next morning. After all the rounds I made, the message I would get was the same that my knee could not be fixed anymore. I paid a total of KES 10000 for all the medication and the consultation over that week and decided to stop and work on other potential income-generating projects. With the plenty of grazing fields in the nearby government forest, I decided to invest heavily in buying eight sheep worth KES 30000. This is one of the easiest projects to manage even with my condition and profitable. I also purchased farm inputs and paid for the farm operation a total of KES7000, new clothing, bedding, and also a bed at KES 5000 and used the remaining amount on foodstuff that I am still using at the moment.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I had gotten an accident with a motorbike and I broke my ankle. I did not manage to attend for further medication because of lack of finance, they needed KES 20000 which I was not able to raise. It has been the lowest moment of my life, I cannot walk properly , I broke the patella and it needs to be replaced at Longisa referral hospital. I intend to KES 20000 for the much needed surgery and for the rest of the money I will use to buy sheep.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I heard that give directly were coming to our place. I became so happy since I am certain I will get to seek medication to undergo a minor surgery of my ankle.I never imagine that one day I will get to attend medication and resume my normal life of walking properly again. The future was so blurred and certain. From the bottom of my heart I absolutely happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge I have is the movement. Since I broke my ankle I hardly walk or even engage myself in meaningful economic activity.I walk with the support of a walking stick. It is a big deal and a great challenge since I do not live a normal live.
