How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Advancing the studies of my children after secondary education is the goal that I currently have. This will ensure that they obtain the right skills to make them stand a good chance of securing decent jobs in the future. Currently, I have put great hope on them to transform our living standards after school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in conducting community engagement before enrolling households and sending the cash transfer. Through this, the officers passed out important information about the program which enhanced awareness and acceptance of the program. I feel that there is nothing that it did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being illiterate, the ambition that I have is to provide quality education for my children so that they may have a better future. I spent a significant amount of the recent transfer on education, I used KES 45,000 to pay for school for my 3 children. One is in college taking a beauty therapy course, another one is in form 4 and about to complete her studies in December. The last one was joining form one so I did shopping for him and paid part of the required fees. I am very grateful for the transfer that my children are learning without any interruption because of pending school fees. The remaining amount assisted me in constructing a decent shelter for my children who were sleeping in a small temporary structure that was leaking and about to collapse.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning when I was about to get out of the bed and I heard a message notification from my phone. I thought my friend was trying to text me for us to leave for work and as I picked up the phone to read the message, I saw a cash transfer message pop-up. I was so eager to open it because I was not expecting money from anyone. "They have sent the money" I shouted. I was so excited that I woke everybody up and my whole family were so happy because this was a turning point for us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that we are able to afford three meals per day and I was able to settle school fees arrears for my children who are nolonger being send home for school fees. That is a big win for me and my family and im looking for to achieve more.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am the sole provider of my family because my husband doesn't have a job. Providing for my eight children has not been easy task because working in a quarry as a casual labourer doesn't earn me much and the job has not been easy. We live in a two rooms house which servers as kitchen, living and bedroom and because we couldn't fit in all, four of my children usually seeks for somewhere to spend their nights in the neighborhood. when I was enrolled into the program, my goal was to build a single room for my children so that they could finally feel like part of my family. I spend KES 23000 of my first transfer to buy iron sheets, KES 11000 to buy bed and mattress for me and my husband as we were previously sleeping on cartons, KES 2000 to clear fees arrear and the balance to buy five bundles of maize floor and other necessities enough to last us for a month. I'm looking forward to spend my next transfer to build the one room structure and roof it so that my children will finally have somewhere to spend their nights comfortably.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better education for my two children. I have two children who are in secondary school. They each pay school fees of KES 35000 per year. I am a casual labourer at the nearby quary earning KES 8000 per month. This is too little to pay for school fees and buy food for the family. My husband is old and he can no longer work. I will use KES 100000 to pay school fees. This will make my children stay at school always and prepare for their KCSE examinations.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My children who are in secondary school got a bursary cheque from the county government of Kilifi on January 2022. The bursary reduced the fees balance for each by KES 10000. The county bursary brought happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of reliable job is the current challenge I am facing. I work as a casual labourer in the nearby quary at Jaribuni. This job is not reliable since in a month we work only two weeks and sometimes we work for only one week. The payment is also very little that it's had to meet my needs.
