How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year , I intend to start a business . The house I renovated has two rooms , I want to convert the children's room into a shop because they are currently sleeping with their grand mother . I n that shop I will sell flour , sugar , oil and "omena" . I chose this business because nobody is selling that in my locality yet these things are on high demand . I know the profit from the shop will supplement my husband's source of income .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Since I was born , I have never seen an organisation like Give Directly . You have really helped the people of this village . Were it not for Give Directly , I would be sleeping under a tree. Where would I have taken my six children ! Thanks to you that we now a separate room from my kids. Another good thing is that Give Directly is non discriminatory when giving transfers , so we all had equal chances of receiving , and that was fair enough . Continue with the same spirit , there is nothing you should improve on , everything is perfect .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm jobless, I spend most of my time farming on our small piece of land . My husband who is the sole bread winner of our family , is a charcoal burner . I was sitted at home , eagerly anticipating for this money when my husband showed me the Mpesa message from Segovia technology , since my line was in his phone . He was so excited and just laughing on his own. We both shared the same feeling of joy because nobody has ever sent us such large sums of money. My house was dilapidated , I bought blocks worth $100 , cement worth $50 and water plus it's transportation worth $30 (We source water from very far ). I then paid $100 for labour for the renovation of my house and as we speak , my house is super beautiful and strong . I'm so grateful because if it were not for Give Directly , my house wouldn't be this strong . I really wanted to have something that would last long , so I spent $140 on four goats . Goats are important because I can later sell them and pay school fees for my children. I also used $30 to pay school fees for my 3 children who are in primary school . Since we did not have food in the house , I bought one bag of maize worth $50 and spend the balance on water .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9:30 am when I was at my home doing my households chores of crushing maize. My phone was with my husband who was in the field grazing our cows. He had came house very early to inform me of the good news that I had received my transfer. I felt very happy and thank God for receiving my transfer that would transform our lives for the better specifically clearing the debt that I owed my neighbour.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently living a debt-free life after clearing the debt that owed my neighbour. Previously, I was living stressful life not knowing where to get money to settle my debt. The constant threats from my lender bothered me a lot something that stole the joy of my life. I thank GiveDirectly for the aid.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer to invest in goat rearing by purchasing 5 goats for KES 16,000. I have wished to venture into this activity so that I may have something to rely on whenever I am faced with any financial crisis. Similarly, it's a future investment for the family it will assist me in supporting my 4 children's educational needs. In addition, I spent KES 15,000 to clear the debts that I had been owing to my neighbor who was threaten to sue us. This was giving me a lot of stress since I had nothing to settle the debt. Furthermore, I used 5000 to clear my children's fee arrears, they had been at home for a long time due to a fees problem. The remaining amount assisted me to purchase sufficient food for the family since we are experiencing drought in our area.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means realizing my dream of having a long-term project of keeping livestock. This investment will contribute to financial stability in the future because it will act as a store of wealth. I, therefore, intend to invest in this project by spending utmost $600 of the transfer to buy 4 indigenous dairy cows to provide milk for my household consumption. Also, I will be selling the surplus to earn income that will support my children's education in the future. The remaining amount ($400) will help me to start a kiosk to sell some foodstuff. This will act as my immediate source of income to settle my household's very basic needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the morning, I prepare my children for school, and thereafter, I start doing some household chores like fetching water and preparation of our lunch meal. At this moment, I usually feel lonely when my children are away and I normally don't enjoy the meal. In the evening I feel so much excited when I am in the company of my children because we talk a lot as share our dinner together. Hence, this makes evening the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a housewife and I depend on my husband who is doing charcoal work. His job is very energy-intensive and the monthly income is usually low, utmost $50. This earning is basically for food and we can not save even some cents for our future use. Therefore, I consider the lack of a stable source of income as the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life.
