How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have decided that I will do farming and will plant vegetables. I will sell some and also use some as food crops. I have seen that I want to invest in something that will earn me income. With the sales I get, I will be able to get profit which in turn will be able to settle all my bills. I have struggled so much to make ends meet and I believe this time round things will fall out into places.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gives people money without any strings attached to it. We get money and use it in a way that will benefit us and improve our living standards. Generally, GiveDirectly is one blessed organization and they've only impacted people's lives and improved their living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The moment I received my transfer, I decided to go get a land where I will do farming. I really thought hard and came back with that great idea of having a land to grow vegetables and sell some and eat what I harvest. After purchasing the land, I went ahead and I bought a bed and a big mattress where my children can comfortably sleep and have a good sleep not like the way they used to sleep. This will really improve how they relate with people and with good sleep their health will improve. I also stocked food for them to make them happy and enjoy the blessings that we got from above.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was ecstatic when the transfer was sent because, at the time of enrollment, I thought the exercise was too genuine to be true. I was skeptical of the entire process. I had never received such financial assistance in my life. I was relieved because, as a result of the transfer, I was able to assist my daughter-in-law, who had been ill for the past three years, by taking her to the hospital. As a result, the transfer enabled me to pay a portion of her medical bills with relative ease. Without a doubt, I have felt a significant financial relief since my first transfer was sent, and I am grateful to GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since I received my first transfer, I have noticed a tremendous improvement in my living condition. Before the transfer, I was really worried about how I would raise school fees for my son who is now in form two as soon as schools re-open because, in the last term, he had fee arrears. With the transfer, I was able to comfortably offset the school fee arrears. I am glad that currently, he has ample time to stay in school and focus on his studies. To me, I count this as a divine intervention that has settled my worries. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for its monetary support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Because I do not have an extra parcel of land, I have to always rent out a farming space every year. This year, I was concerned because I had been experiencing financial difficulties. As a result, when I received my transfer, I was able to rent a plot of land for KES 2,500, which I am currently using to grow maize. I will be able to support my family easily thanks to the crops. Furthermore, I purchased a mattress and a bed because my previous ones were too old and uncomfortable to sleep on. Lastly, I bought food for the family because what we had purchased had run out and I did not have any extra money at the time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been thinking of starting a business here for a very long time. There has been a gap whereby you find the shop is one and residents have to walk long distances to buy commodities. Therefore, by establishing a kiosk which will be providing most of the common food items is going to generate an income of at least 500KES a day. This will definitely make me able to take care of my needs and those of my grandchildren who were left here by their mother.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last year December, my daughter who went to the UAE in 2019 came very safe and sound. There has been stories over the media of workers being mistreated there by their employers but when I saw her i really felt good and it made my December one to remember.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have a daughter-in-law who was diagnosed with TB of the bones. The situation has led to her causing all her legs paralyzed. She has three children and her husband is transporting goods from Kenya to Uganda. So as a mother-in-law, I have been left with a burden of taking care of her fully from washing her clothes and that of her children. I do wash her body as well which has been a great challenge for me. Am totally restricted from moving around and sometimes I can not attend some community groups for women empowerment.
