How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different from how it would have been if I never received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I don't think I would have managed to extend my house or boost my business. These are the biggest goals I have always wanted to achieve but due to lack of enough money, I kept on postponing them. I now have peace of mind because my business is doing well and the fact that I have a separate room where my children sleep makes me a proud mother. They are still not of an age but I had desired to have them sleep comfortably in their own room because they will soon become mature young adults.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the idea of GiveDirectly to giving out unconditional cash transfers has been the best. Personally, my life has greatly changed as a result of this help. I have been able to accomplish various goals that I could not have accomplished were it not for them. The fact that it is unconditional makes it more effective because one doesn't necessarily have to start a business. You spend it on the most pressing needs.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a ploughing machine. I had bought bulls using the first transfer, therefore, buying the machine made it complete. I know that this will really be of help during the next planting season since I will not have to hire casual workers to till my land. Apart from that, I also managed to extend my small house. I used to sleep with my children in the same room which was very uncomfortable considering how fast they are growing. Although they are not of age, I thought of having a separate room because time goes faster and all in all they will still have to sleep in a different place later. In addition to that, I also managed to boost my cutlery business. I have been doing this business for quite sometime and it has been settling most of my needs. Even though it has its ups and downs I think it is a good business that is why I decided to expand the business by adding more stock.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have managed to cement my rental houses. I now get more than I use to get because the houses look decent. The tenants have not complained and to say the truth who doesn't like living in a decent place?. I used to rent them out at 1000KES but now they pay 2000KES. My income has increased and I am able to use the amount to settle other bills. I can actually say that my living standards have improved compared to before I got the transfer.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer, I felt very happy. I have a small baby that I have to breastfeed at night. This was just one of the days that I had to wake up and was feeding my baby, and in the process, I had my message tone ring. I had to check it because I did not expect anyone to text me at that time. Upon reading the message I just realized that the transfer had been sent. I decided to stay calm and went back to sleep with the baby. When morning came I broke the good news to my husband who could not contain himself after getting the good news.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I have some houses in Mombasa that I have been renting out each at 1000KES. They cost was low just because I had not cemented the rooms. When I received my transfer, my first plan of action was to cement them. It has really paid off because I have already increased the rent. Each tenant is paying 2000 KES and they are not complaining because their houses look decent. To me, this means a lot because my source of income has increased. I also bought a solar lantern because I have been using a torch. Sharing a torch was difficult because everyone wanted to do different things and we had to share one torch. I am glad that my house is well lit and I do not struggle using the torch anymore. I finally bought two bulls. This will help me to cultivate my land and even carry water from the water point.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My aim is for my family to be food secure. This I hope to achieve by purchasing oxen in order to engage in large scale farming thus resulting in more produce when it rains. I also plan to boost capital for my small shop so that I can make more profit thus ensuring am able to buy enough food for my family especially in times of drought such as now. The rest, I will save in an account for the future when need arises.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I run a small shop within my village and that is where I spend most of my day. The best part is in the evening when am doing my calculations and seeing that I have made profit. Knowing my source of livelihood is doing well gives me a lot of joy and pride.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Drought and famine is a real threat in our area that has affected many once before, I am seeing signs of it re-emerging and it has become a great concern. My farm is not producing enough and I have to dig deep into my pockets to buy food for my family posing a threat to my business because what is spent is more than the profit gained. Water is also becoming scarce because our water pans are almost drying up due to lack of rainfall. Both humans and animals are forced to share sources of water due to this scarcity posing a great risk to our health.
