How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different because of the dairy cows that I have. I am so sure that I will benefit a lot from them. First I will be getting some plenty of milk for my family. Which will make us be healthier. I will also be selling some few liters to my neighbors and get money in return. This will now be my major source of income. Previously I used to depend on the little money my spouse could get from his casual jobs. Secondly, I will be getting some manure from the cows. This will improve the fertility of my farm hence resulting in good harvesting products.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly has really made us be so proud in many ways. First, the permanent houses that we constructed through the financial support from GiveDirectly. Most of us think it's still a dream because we were not expecting to own then anytime soon. The situation in my village unpleasant especially the issue of houses. Most of us were homeless or sleep under very small houses which are grass thatched. We are now excited because our lives have totally changed. Secondly, most of us now keep livestock in our compounds. This is also another way of indicating how our lives have transformed. We now have dairy cows which provide us with milk, manure and many more. This will really uplift our living standards. We are so thankful to this organization. There is no sector GiveDirectly failed us it is the best organization I have ever seen.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying paying school fees for my children. Previously they have been sent home to collect school fees and they could stay home for weeks because of my financial status. I then bought some pieces of iron sheets at KES 8400, a metal door at KES 5000, timber at KES 3000. This was purposely for the renovation of my house. I then bought some foodstuffs at KES 3000. I then saved the remaining amount of money in my account. I am planning to open a kiosk very soon with the money that I saved.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I was buying milk daily from a neighbour and at times I could not meet the whole bill and bearing in mind that I was taking milk due to my health condition. Through the transfer, I acquired two cows which will ensure that I get milk continuously and their will be no more expenses on milk.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On receiving the notification from GiveDirectly, I felt relieved and happy again since, through the transfer, I would be able to acquire my own cows for milking. This alone brought joy into my life again that I will no longer buy milk.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I purchased two cows upon receiving my first transfer in order to get adequate milk for the sake of my health. I am suffering from ulcers and I was advised by my the doctors to be taking milk more frequently to at least reduce the pains. I was buying every day from neighbours and it was expensive. I now have my own cows of which I will be getting milk from at no cost. I also bought iron sheets to renovate my roof since it was old and not strong enough to withstand strong winds. It was one day blown away by a tornado and I was not able to renovate and buy new iron sheets. I used the same old sheets. I did not like it though. On the remaining amount, I paid for school fees for my three children who are now going on well with studies with no cases of the being sent out of class.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy iron sheets for renovating my house and build a bigger one as the current one cannot accomodate all my children. I will spend part of the transfer on buying a sewing machine for my daughter who finished her tailoring course so that she can be independent and fend for her children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part if my day is in the morning when I go to my farm to plough maize. This makes me happy as I will be able to get my harvest which will suppliment our diet as a family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face in my life is that my house is very small and have two grown up children who are forced to sleep in my maize granary due to lack of a better shelter.
