How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
So far I do not have any new goal that I can talk of because the main goal was to construct a permanent house and I am very glad that this was a success. I felt there was a need to sleep in a better shelter since the initial one was very small in size it couldn't accommodate all my family members. Two of my children were forced to sleep at their grandmother's house which was a bit far from the village we lived in. As a parent, I feel so happy because finally, I live with all my family members under the same roof.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well in my life and I will forever be thankful for that. First, the idea of acquiring the cash transfers which were sent directly to my mobile phone stood out. This empowered me to own assets like livestock, beautiful houses, and also managed to send all my children to school. Therefore I do not see anything that GiveDirectly has not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a fraction of my second transfer on buying some livestock more so two dairy cows at KES 30000 and five goats at KES 12500. I opted to purchase them because they have numerous benefits as compared to other domestic animals. With the dairy cows, I will be getting plenty of liters of milk which will be for the family's usage, and selling the remaining liters to the dairy shops. According to me, this will be the only source of income that I will be relying on considering I have been jobless for years. In addition to that, I cleared school fees of KES 5000 for my three children who are in primary schools in the nearby village. Seeing them waking up every morning and going to school without any hiccups has been my dream. I'm glad GiveDirectly has made it happen. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was cleaning my compound when I heard one of my children calling my name. I was a bit curious and by the look on her face, she seemed so excited. However, a few moments later, I realized she had read the message from Segovia Technology. I had finally recived the money that I had patiently been waiting for. I felt so happy because I knew I would soon build a spacious house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being the family's breadwinner, who solely depends on casual jobs to fend for my family, life has never been easy at all. Most of the time meeting the family's needs like the daily meals was not achievable and we have at times been forced to skip meals all this while. However, this was not my major concern compared to the insecurity our family experienced due to living in small and unsecured grass-thatched. With the five family members, we couldn't shelter under the same roof. Therefore they had to sleep at their grandmother's house which was relatively small as well. During the winter seasons, we would all move from one compound to the other seeking shelter which was very embarrassing and stressful. Apart from that, some of the properties would get damaged or lost due to the poor condition of my house. Some of the valuable assets I have lost over the years are my utensils and a few chickens. I have reached this far because of God. All I can say is that all my three children grew up with God's grace. Even the coming of GiveDirectly is because of God's will and I can't thank them enough because through them I was able to build a bigger house. So far this is the biggest difference in my daily life. I no longer seek shelter from friends and the joy of living with my family under one roof is immeasurable
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on buying beddings such as a new bed and mattress at a total of KES 15000. For all those years I have been using the traditional beds made of ropes which were very uncomfortable. I could always complain of back pains. I am glad because this will soon come to an end. Also, I bought pieces of iron sheets, building poles, threads, timber, and nails KES 20000. This was for the construction of a new house because the initial one was very small and in a very poor state. My family is composed of five members and therefore some of my children had to seek shelter at their grandmother's house. I later gave the labor KES 5000. In addition, I cleared school fees (KES 2000) for my two children who are in primary school since they were on and off because of the arrears. To do that I bought one goat that will now serve as the living asset that I can rely on. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it to buying enough foodstuffs for my family that would sustain us for a couple of days

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a descent and a spacious house for my family of five. I currently live in a one bedroom house that is not enough for my family. I am planning to use 400 dollars to construct a two bedroom house for my children and a family store. I will use the balance to start a retail shop in the village. Most people in my village travel long distances to access a retail shop. Therefore having one in the village will reduce their burden at the same time earn me handsone profits. The profits will enable me sustain my family well.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. O normally close my job at midday and head home. When I get home I always relax with my wife and our last born child and this makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship in my life is food insecurity. On many occasions, I have been going without food the whole day. This has caused suffering to my young family.
