In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The idea of making follow-up calls after sending the transfers is a show of concern from GiveDirectly. I have witnessed people who lost their transfers tracing the people who stole from them with the help of the organization. It is an awesome way to ensure that the transfer goes to and is spent by the intended person. Everyone in the village is glad they received their transfers as was promised on time and there are no complaints so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We are a family of six all staying in a single room house. The children are growing fast and it is not comfortable sharing the same sleeping room with them. I do not have any source of income instead, I depend fully on my spouse. He works for a company in town but I do not think he earns much which is evidenced by the way he struggles to meet our needs. I know he can not afford the cost of constructing a new house because we have children in school who need school fees. I, therefore, saved the whole of the second transfer so that when I received the third then I will add to it and purchase some pieces of iron sheets.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy but in disbelief when I got the funds. I thought that it was a lie. I didn't believe that an organization could easily give out cash. All my doubts were cleared when I received the transfer. At the time, I was at home resting. So, the first thing I thought of doing was to start a poultry farming business. To actualize this, I bought a chicken the following day. This will boost my finances and aid with the provision of my family's needs.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before I started receiving funds from givedirectly, I was going through a very difficult phase of my life. My husband being a casual worker while I sold doughnuts in the street, our earnings could not meet all our needs, especially school fee payments. We work tirelessly to ensure our children are well fed. But most times this is usually not the case. Now that I'm receiving these funds, I feel like a heavy load has been lifted off my shoulders. I am now able to feed them comfortably. I also want to improve my life by starting a poultry farming business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As much as I sell doughnuts in the street, I still depend on my husband for financial support. My business only brings in KES daily. this is barely enough to feed my two children; 7-year-old and two-year-old. My firstborn who is in school currently has a school fee arrears of KES 600. Their termly fee is KES 1,300. Since school fee payment has been a problem, I would like to also start a poultry farming business. So, when I got the funds, I used KES 250 to purchase a chicken. The amount that remained, I used to acquire some nourishments as there was no food in the house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am forced to spend my nights at my business premises due to lack of a house. This has deprived me of my privacy as customers have access to my personal space. My house collapsed last year when its poles were infested with termites. I will use my transfers to build a two-bedroom structure that can accommodate our family of four. The building materials(poles and iron sheets) and labor will cost me around 80,000 KES.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My children had never had a chance to celebrate their birthdays until December last year. It was quite a nice experience seeing them happy and I got overjoyed as a parent. Their father was able to join the even as being away from us for about a year.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My donuts business generates a profit of 100 KES a day. My husband who works in Mombasa provides us with 3000 KES a month. This money can not sufficiently sustain all our needs at home( two kids and me). We someone times end up missing our important necessities owing to this dire situation.
