How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the transfers, I used to depend on a small income from odd jobs in my area. They were very inconsistent since many of us in the area were fighting for the same jobs. As a result of low income, I used to struggle financially and I could not even buy myself clothes. I used to survive on debts and in most cases, would miss meals. When I started receiving my transfers from GD, I thought of a way to sustain my income long after GD transfers are over. I decided to start a poultry business which has really impacted my finances positively especially during the festive season. I sold so many over the holidays and used the money for my personal use and to boost the business. I know very soon I will have enough to sustain supplying to a hotel so that I don't have to only rely on holidays to sell.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
The only goal I have which I would want to achieve with these transfers is to continue boosting my business/project. I would want to have more chicken in the business by buying on a monthly basis with part of the transfers. I would also want to buy feeds too so that they can be healthy and help in making maximum profit from them. The profits will help me meet my needs easily and help me achieve my goal of being financially stable.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on buying chicken feeds for my poultry. I started the business with these transfers because I did not have any reliable source of income before the transfers. I have had to depend on the transfers to keep my project going by buying feeds on a monthly basis. The remaining part of the transfer I used on paying school fees for my daughter in primary school. She had not been sent home but just paid to help reduce the balance she has in school.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The greatest difference in my life is that I now have a stable source of income from a job that I got only a few months after I started receiving these transfers. Even though the job is not in any way related to Give Directly, I feel that the transfers put me in a better position to get the job because I used the transfers to acquire a driving licence which is a major qualification and also used the transfers to register to a recruitment platform that eventually connected me to my current employer. I had not managed to acquire my licence a year after I completed my driving course due to lack of income which is why I say that without GD, maybe I would not have gotten the job.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I want to expand the poultry project I have into something profitable as I am currently not selling. This will need a proper plan on how to manage them and where to get the best market. I am planning to use most of my transfers to construct a larger pen so that I can bring in more geese and turkey. I decided to move away from chicken-rearing because they are more prone to diseases as compared to geese and turkey.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I recently started a poultry project on turkey and geese after the chickens I used to have all died after they caught a mysterious disease. I used the whole amount I recently received together with some of my savings to buy construction materials that I used to construct a poultry pen for security purposes and to keep the poultry from moving into my neighbours' compounds.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The transfer has enabled me to get my driving license since I did not have any. It has been a year since I completed my driving course. I am happy that at least I am eligible to work as a driver now. I also began a chicken rearing project at home. I am expecting that through this project, I will be able to sell them in the near future and raise sufficient capital to venture into other business opportunities. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because I would not have fulfilled this at my own cost.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I began a poultry project after I started receiving the transfer. I put up the structures and purchased some chicken to start with. My new goal now is to have chicken layers for commercial egg production because of its a lucrative business opportunity.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 1500 of my transfer on paying school fees for my child. I cleared her arrears so that she would be allowed to continue with her studies. In addition to this, I also spent a portion of the transfer on boosting my poultry project. I bought some chicken feeds and other equipment to run my project effectively. I spent the remaining amount to cater for my household basic needs like food and other expenses.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I do not have any new goal at the moment since I am planning to expand my poultry project. The transfers I get from GiveDirectly has enabled me to raise enough capital to start poultry keeping project. I planning to keep both chicken and turkey. I chose this idea because they are easy to maintain and the business of selling the poultry itself or its products has high returns because they are on high demand. This two type of birds can also be reared in one place. I believe all will go well since I have all it takes to make sure the business is successful.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is that I have now started keeping some turkey. It has been my dream for a long time but since the start-up capital is so high and my little income could not allow me to do so. I kept on hoping that I would one day accomplish this idea. I thank Give Directly for coming through to help me start this business because it is going to open many doors for me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfer to buy two Turkeys. I decided on this since they are profitable and needs less attention, their food is also locally available. Its eggs are quite expensive compared to chicken eggs because it is believed turkey eggs have medicinal value. I believe that with time the business will grow and start generating enough income. This will help me cater to my family needs and goals. I do not regret going for this idea since it is lucrative hence diversifying my source of income since I am currently the only person who has ventured into this business in my region.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning after I woke up as I was going through my phone when I saw a message. Upon reading its content, my heart was filled with happiness as the message confirmed that I had received the money that GiveDirectly had promised us. This gave me hope to fulfill my dreams and establish myself. I sat down for almost thirty minutes meditating on the money I had just received, planning and re-planning the ideas on how best I could use the transfers. For the first time in life, I had the hope of achieving my plans. The message also made me know that indeed GiveDirectly was going to honor their promise.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My first priority is to expand my poultry business in order to get more income that will help me to take care of my family. I truly believe that this will uplift my living standard as I will have a stable source of income from the sale of poultry. My second priority will be to save part of the transfer, for future emergencies like outbreak of diseases that may attack my poultry. My third priority will be to use the remaining part my transfer to add more poultry.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is crime, however much I have an ambition of starting a poultry business. I fear that I will not be able to accomplish my dreams, because where I live, insecurity is high and I have witnessed many of my neighbors' businesses being attacked. You find that one cannot start a certain business such M-pesa due to fear of being robbed.
What are your greatest ambitions?
I have always wanted to be a successful businessman, just like Jimmy wanjingi, a renowned businessman in kenya so that I can be wealthy. I have witness many people succeeding in life due to engaging in businesses.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I usually wake up at 6:00am, then I do house chores, afterwards Isit down with my phone scrolling online business opportunity that might interest me, this will depend if I get a business opportunity, if so I will do follow up in order to know more about that business. Afterwards, at around 2:00pm I normally go to our group where i usually take advantage of my free time to mingle and to do some clean ups. At around 7:00pm I head back home just to be with my family.
