How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intend to do an investment. I chose to create a grocery store after doing some research because, as a result of the prolonged drought, vegetables are difficult to get in our village. I am convinced that doing this would generate significant sales because consumers travel great distances in search of vegetables. I will be able to support my family's needs because of this business. In addition to buying and selling vegetables, I want to build a vegetable garden next to my home because I can use the adjacent access to swamp water for irrigation. As a result, purchasing vegetables for sale will be more affordable.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving cash to those in need is, in my opinion, what distinguishes GiveDirectly as a superior company. In ways that no one could have imagined, this money has changed people's lives in my neighborhood. My one and only wish is for the cash transfers to resume because I'm stranded and things have started to get difficult once more due to the high cost of living.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon getting the second transfer, I was desperate of seeing my children continue with their studies. I had one form-four child, two were joining junior secondary and one is in grade 8. Therefore, I paid $170 for the form four child, $200 for the two junior secondary children, and $20 for the grade 8 child. I did so to ensure that my children meet their desires as far as academics are concerned. For the remaining amount, I bought some food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 pm when I was on my way from a neighboring school where I work as a cook when I received a message on my phone. I did not hesitate to check despite being in a hurry to prepare an evening meal for my children. I did not believe my eyes at the first glance. I made an emergency stop to check properly to be sure of what I had seen. Indeed, it was true. I received $550 in my account from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with joy knowing that the chronic problem of sleeping with my big boys in the same house had got a solution.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that is a result of the GiveDirectly transfer is like a miracle to me. Initially, we used to sleep in the same house. Some slept in the corridor. This was not hygienic and also there was no privacy but due to poverty, I had no alternative. As of now, I am happy that my boys have their house though it is not enough compared to where we were this is like heaven for them. This miracle came as a result of GiveDirectly and I can sincerely say that, if it were not for this organization we would be still squeezing into the same house with my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I first decided to clear some school fee balances for my children so that they could settle and continue with their studies. I have seven children, out of them, one is in secondary school, three are in upper primary school and the other three are in lover primary. Therefore, I paid $200 for the secondary school child and $40 for the upper primary school children. As of now, they are happily settled in school and I am grateful for that because since they are settled I expect good performance from them. Thereafter, I opted to construct a house for my boys whom we have been sleeping in the same house with. , Since I already had the building poles, I told them to go to the forest to search for rafters. After that, I bought twelve Iron sheets for $76, and the labor charge of the contractor was $35. Currently, my children are very happy with the freedom they have since they have their own house. I am relieved of the deprivation of privacy which I have lived with for a longer period in my house with my boys. For the remaining amount, I bought some food for my family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I must first acquire a spacious house by extending the one I currently have. This will cost around $100 because I already have some materials that I need like iron sheets. I also plan to do mud walls which is also freely available. Once this is done, I will spend $200 as injection into my business.I'll then spend the remainder on food and school fees for my children. Currently I have two in grade school paying a a total of $30 per term while the one in highschool pays $350 per academic year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The first half of that period wasn't happy at all as one of my daughters, Nancy Riziki who is attending our local grade school was down with a severe case of ulcers. She had to spend over one and a half months out of school and I parted with around $50 for her treatment done in two different referral hospitals at Kilifi and Mombasa Counties. I'm really happy right now that she's fine and continuing with her schooling uninterruptedly.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
This prolonged draught that has lasted two years so far is still my main challenge as most of our problems starts with it. It has made it extremely difficult to get food cheaply like we used to back in the days when we used to practice subsistence farming.p We now have to buy everything from the market as there hasn't been any harvest over that time. For this reason we're really financially struggling because my husband who is employed as a security guard in a neighboring school having just a meagre income still has to support two house holds since he's polygamous. I do not know how much he earns exactly though. Myself on the other side sell fries at the same school and this earns me around $1 daily plus another one dollar I'm paid for cooking for the teachers at the school. I have six dependants; three of my children, my mother-in-law as well as my husband.
