How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We are so thankful that we were able to achieve all the plans that we had discussed with my wife before receiving the transfer. I now have a new goal of building my store for welding since I am currently employed in one of the stores. Owning one will allow me to have more income and also create employment for other youth in my village.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well by enrolling all the households in my village. Most households have improved their standards of living by constructing iron-roofed houses, owning dairy cows and water tanks. I have no complaints at all.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my second transfer, I prioritized constructing a two-roomed house since I had an old and single-roomed house. With KES 33,000 I used in completing the house and at least right now I do not shy off from welcoming visitors to the house. With KES 12,000 I used in clearing school fees arrears for my child in secondary school. I am so grateful that she had ample time to study and recoup what she had lost when she was away from school. The remaining amount of my transfer, I used in buying clothes and foodstuff for my family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was on a Wednesday around 11:35 Pm when a message came in but could not realize instantly that it was from GiveDirectly since I was partially asleep. On checking it up the next morning, I was very happy, and the excitement on my family members' faces as we planned was so high as well. I later collected from the nearby shopping center and started spending according to the priorities that we had with my household.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The construction of a new house for my family is so far the biggest difference in my daily life since I received the first transfer. Before receiving this money, I could not foresee such s a great transformation coming since I had just gotten a knee injury when I was enrolled. I could not do anything then since I was still on the mobility aids. But the motivation that came with the receipt of the transfer brought an amazing healing power. I am glad that I am feeling better now and even though I am not as productive as before, I am still grateful for the helping hand from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After a considerate discussion and decision on spending with my household, I spent a portion of KES 27500 out of the first transfer on the purchase of 30 iron sheets that are currently useful in the construction of a new house and the payment of the labor charges. I had been living with a family of four in a small hut that served a dual purpose of a kitchen as well as a living room that changes to a bed space later at night. As my children grow, we saw it as a good idea to construct a bigger house that has enough space to accommodate all of us. I also cleared school fees arrears of KES 8000 for my son currently in a secondary school which has given him ample study time unlike before when he would be sent home at least twice every week. With the remaining amount, I spent KES 10000 on purchasing clothing for every member of my household and used the remaining in establishing poultry farming which has been a reliable source of income through the collection and selling of eggs to the neighborhood.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I sold the only cow that I had to pay school fees for my son who was joining high school and we had to be given 2 cups of milk by my parents so that my children could drink and it is not enough for them. Receiving this money will mean that I will use KES 30000 to buy a cow that will give us enough milk for household consumption and sell some to the nearest dairy society. Selling milk to them every day will enable me to earn some money to support my family. I plan to expand my house with KES 15000 so that it can accommodate us when we have guests.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I was involved in a motorcycle accident, I was at a loss because I had a family that I had to look after and also thought a lot about my recovery. 3 months after, I see a tremendous change in my recovery. Having a supportive wife during this time and seeing a lot of progress on my health has brought me happiness in the last 6 months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am facing is financial constraints. I was involved in a motorcycle accident 3 months ago and had to rest for my injuries to heal. I am a welder at Siongiroi and since I am not in a position to work, my wife has now taken the role of providing for us by doing casual jobs around and earning something small to keep my family going.
