How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After accomplishing my goals of boosting the shop business and connecting tap water to the household. I do not have any other new goal at the moment. All I want is to concentrate my efforts on boosting the businesses of selling water and the shop. When all of them are operating well, I will be able to earn and save income that will comfortably meet the basic needs of my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well in enrolling every active household in the village without discriminating based on their economic status or religion. In my opinion, GiveDirectly should offer training to eligible households about how the transfers could impact their lives. Then, give them the right to decide on how to spend the transfer. Also to include more physical follow-up to make sure recipients get maximum impact from the cash aid.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the first transfers connecting tap water to my household this was to have readily available clean water for the family use as well as to sell to the villagers. Due to the drought conditions, the water does not flow regularly since there is water rationing. At such times, it is very difficult to obtain water for use. I spent $380 of the recent transfer to purchase a water tank of capacity 2500Letres. My intention was to store tap water for my family's consumption as well as sell them to neighbors during the water shortage periods. In addition, I spent $100 to boost the small shop business where I sell foodstuffs like corn flour, beans, sugar and other detergents like soap by purchasing more stock. Nowadays, I am happy to see the business thriving well and our customers are getting a range of products. Similarly, the profit has increased by 5% making it easy to meet my family's essential needs like food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at my shop that evening attending to customers when I got a message on my phone. Upon checking who could have sent the message, I realized it was an Mpesa message. I was curious to know who could have sent me the money since I was not expecting anyone to send it. I was greatly overjoyed when I realized that I had received my first transfer. I could not wait to withdraw the money and restock my business which was not doing well.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am operating a shop business and though I was getting some good profit from it, I was not stocking different kinds of products. Also, it was not doing well and it was my only source of income. In order to increase sales, I had to buy more stock. I did not have the capital to restock my shop until I received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was able to buy a good stock of products and my shop is now thriving. I am expecting some good returns from this shop.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a trained teacher but up to now, I have not secured a job. I have been on short contracts which could not sustain me. I used my savings to start two projects which so far have been my source of income. I am operating a shop and also a poultry project as I search for a job. My desire was to grow my business and also expand my poultry project. Receiving the transfer offered a huge boost to these projects. I invested Ksh. 23000 on restocking my shop with different kinds of products. I am expecting a huge profit margin out of this. Having restocked my shop, I spent the remaining amount on improving the Chicken house and bought more birds to keep and rear them. I can readily look for a market to sell the chickens like hotels once they increase in number. This will ensure a cash flow also alongside the shop business.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My business has been down since the covid pandemic struck simply because of relying on it for the family's upkeep. I plan to restock the business by using KES 60,000, and KES 50,000 to purchase a water tank to reserve water since this area has a scarcity of water it will be the best idea too which will enable me to earn more coins.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One month ago I signed a small agreement with a local wholesaler who will be supplying shop items at a cheaper price. This gave me joy because I am sure will make more profit out of it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am an ECD teacher by profession. Getting the dream job was a challenge since I graduated four years ago. After two years of being jobless, I decided to start a retail shop business in the village. It has not been easy for me and my family since we all depended on it which has led to the closure of business several times.
