How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Our new goal is to build a kitchen house. We do not have a kitchen and hence we are using the house that we had built with the first transfer as a kitchen and as a sleeping house. We demolished the one that we used to live in before so that we could get some materials for building another one. Building a kitchen will hence mean that the new house that we are living in will be conducive for sleeping in it and welcoming guests.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly by coming up with the program of helping the needy in the society. The money has helped us a lot since we have managed to make many developments with it such as building new houses, buying land, buying livestock and so much more. The living standards of the people in the community have hence been uplifted and we are no longer like before. I hence do not see anything wrong with the way they conduct their work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of our recent transfer money on completing the payment for a piece of land that we had bought. We bought half of an acre and we had managed to pay some money with the savings that we had. It has always been our wish to buy another piece because the one that we were given at home is small and not enough to do farming. We were not able to complete making the payment because we did not have the money. I am a housewife while my husband is casually employed as a herdsman where he usually gets paid KES 3000 at the end of the month. The money that he gets paid is only enough to purchase food. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly since we have already built a house on the piece of land and we have grown some maize on it that we are about to weed. We planted the maize with part of the recent transfer that we got from GiveDirectly. We will thus no longer be incurring a lot of costs buying food having bought the piece of land. We can plant a variety of other crops for our consumption. With the remaining transfer money, we used it in buying food for our family. Thank you so much for the help.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home busy doing my house chores when I had my phone ringing, it was around 9 am, when I picked my phone to check, that was when I realized that I had received money from GiveDirectly, I was overwhelmed with joy, I thanked God for the support that I had received, I knew all my plans would be realized now that I had the money at hand, I am happy and grateful for this wonderful gift that brought smiles to lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life is different now because I have managed to build a decent house for my family, the house that we were living in was a family house, it was small and old but we had no choice but to live in due to unreliable sources of income I am so happy and thankful that I was able to build a house in a short period, I am happy that I was able to stock up foodstuffs in the house meaning that my children would have enough to eat unlike before where they could sleep on empty stomachs. I am grateful that GiveDirectly has lifted my living standard to a better and a higher level in my society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a farmer and a mother of four children, my husband works as a shepherd in the nearby town, we had relocated to some other area sometimes back, but we were forced to return due to unfavourable weather conditions, this forced us to start from scratch yet we never had enough money, life was so unbearable, we were given a very small shelter in our family land. When we received the first transfer we used KES 30,000 in building a decent house for ourselves, I was so relieved to have my own house, I then used the remaining part of the transfer in buying 2 bags of maize so that our four children would not sleep on an empty stomach. I am grateful for the support that impacted my life positively.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My day-to-day desire has always been, to build a more spacious and comfortable house for my family of 6, since we all currently live in this small one-roomed grass-thatched hut. I will therefore use $300 of my transfer to actualize this dream. Buying a dairy cow worth $350 of my transfer and buying sufficient foodstuffs for my family, more so maize and beans to feed on till the next harvest season is also what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a housewife, the only activity I engage in to support my spouse in providing for our family is farming in our 1-acre piece of land. I normally go to the farm each morning to till, plant, and water vegetables. I am always happy in the morning, especially when I see my vegetables flourishing, an assurance that there will be sufficient food for my family to feed on.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My spouse who is an employed cattle herder and earns $30 monthly struggles a lot in providing for our family. We have 3 school-going children, thus his earnings are only enough to support their education. The small 1-acre piece of land we cultivate yields poor harvests due to land unproductive resulting from prolonged drought, hence the little we harvest is hardly enough to take us through the next harvest season. This is the biggest hardship we face.
