How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently I am doing a second hand clothes selling business, and at any time when I get some money the first thing I will consider is to buy more materials and expand my business. Having enough selling materials boosts the business because people will get whatever they require hence enabling me to get good yields from my business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is an organization that came to empower and uplift us the people from humble backgrounds. The organization restored confidence to us and we are seeing ourselves as human beings too. Our livelihood was poor, no secured houses, no school fees for our children, no meals neither good clothes. As at now we were able to acquire all these basic needs through GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I used KES 25000.00 in adding stock to my existing business. I started a business of selling second-hand clothes after getting the first transfer. I also paid KES 8000.00 school fees for a whole year for my child so that he can has a good learning environment without being distracted for fees. Thereafter, I bought a mattress for KES 4500.00 because the one I had was worn out. Since we were going through a dry season, I opted to keep the rest of the money for family use.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home, in my kitchen with my daughter. It was 9 a.m and I was cooking when I heard a message notification on my phone. On checking it, I saw the message indicating that I had received the cash transfer from GiveDirectly. I was ecstatic. Never in my life had I ever imagined that I would receive such a huge amount of money. Many of my financial problems were about to be solved and I couldn't believe it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For many months, I watched my one and a half-year-old daughter struggle to function normally. She fell ill and became paralysed on one side of her body. As a mother, it was heartbreaking to see my child go through this. I wished that she was able to have a normal life like other children. When I received this transfer from GiveDirectly, I was able to pay for her physiotherapy treatment. Because of this, she has made impressive progress. My favourite moments are when I watch her play with other children. They remind me of how far we have come. Our lives have truly changed thanks to this GiveDirectly. I couldn't be more grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother of one. Sadly, my daughter who is one and a half years old fell ill months ago and became paralysed on one side of her body. This situation has caused me a lot of distress because of the high cost of treatment. Even though I run a beauty salon to earn a living, I earn very little money from this and can barely afford to pay for our living expenses. I felt that investing in my business by acquiring more beauty supplies and improving the quality of services would attract more customers and increase profit, and therefore improve our standard of living. So I spent KES 39,200 on expanding the business. Also, we needed a new bed to sleep in more comfortably. The one we had was small and too old. So I spent KES 11,000 on a new bed and mattress. Lastly, I spent KES 4,500 on hospital costs. My daughter needed physiotherapy treatment to get back to normal functioning.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means possession of business. I got married in 2018 after completing form four, unfortunately the marriage did not work so I was forced to return to my parent's home with 1 kid, Since then life has not been easy. I struggled to start life afresh as well as taking care of my child financially. I am a hairdresser who depend on few people who needs my service here at the village but my ambition is to open hairdressing business nearby town where I could get more customers. I plan to use first transfer to to open a business, 15000 to renovate my house and the balance to open account saving for my child who will soon join kindergarten at neighboring school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Happiest part of my day is in the morning. when i wake up in the morning seeing my child alive makes me happy and thankful to almighty.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is inadequate finances to bring up my child. I have only one daughter who was diagnosed with yellow fever at birth after treating it she became disabled. Since then it has been difficulty to raise up funds for her medication and our daily needs since I have no one to depend on.
