How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been living in my parents' home for two years since I was married here. Staying here has certain limitations as compared to staying in my own home such as the freedom to welcome your own visitors. Since my spouse is currently studying, there were limited resources to try and build our own place. I am glad that using the transfer, we were able to put up our own house. Currently, we are in the finishing touches and I will soon be living in my own house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I loved that everyone in my village received the same amount of transfer despite the living conditions. Fairness and equity were seen to be done. Everything was well planned in my opinion.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used part of the transfer to buy building materials to finish building up our own house. The first transfer helped me buy the first batch of the materials which had been used up. I also bought a heifer for rearing. We currently rear my brother-in-law's cow that has been supplying us with milk. I thought it was a good time to get our own. I used the rest of the transfer to buy food for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
After my husband lost his job he decided to engage in subsistence farming. This was just when he lost hope after getting unfruitful results in his job search. That met I had to pick up all the roles of being a breadwinner with the little income I made out of teaching in a nearby vocational training college. It has been very challenging to met most of the family's needs. With the introduction of the transfer, my husband thought of going back to school and further his education. I am hopeful that after he completes school, our income shall double because his likelihood of getting a job will be higher when looking at his qualification as compared to now.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a message in the morning that confirmed GiveDirectly had sent money but out of disbelieve, I decided to confirm through checking my Mpesa account balance . I felt very happy after making sure it was true since I knew the money will facilitate an acquisition of a new house that I have always longed for.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer to buy building materials such as iron sheets, brick, cements and paid workers who facilitated the construction of my permanent house . The house is not yet completed but when it shall be , I will no longer staying in my parent's in laws house but rather have my own . The remaining amount I paid school fees for my spouse to enroll for college .

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Buying a dairy fressian cow at $400 and constructing a poultry unit to start practising poultry farming is what receiving this money means to me. I am a teacher by proffession hence the income generated by these projects i plan to use my transfers on will supplement my salary hence improved living standards of my family
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a teacher, i love my job since it is what my family depends on for food and other needs.Spending my time in school is therefore the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Teaching is my occupation while my spouse studies in collage. I am the breadwinner of the family yet i haven't been employed permanently by teachers service commission hence the salary of $ 120 i earn monthly is not sufficient to support all the needs of my family, which is the greatest challenge i face.
