How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to buy more chickens for rearing. I would like to increase the number so that I can get more income from it. Another reason is because my children are still young and hence I am still at home taking care of them. I thus have a lot of free time that I need to utilize. I have been rearing a few chickens and they have been very beneficial to me. I usually sell the eggs and the money that I get from the sales, I use it to buy household items that are missing. I also at times sell the cocks and use the money in buying food for our consumption. This way, I get to help my husband with the household expenses.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is very fair and they are not biased when enrolling people into their program. They enrolled everyone who belonged to the village and they did not ask for any bribe from anyone. I hence do not see anything that went wrong that I would recommend to them to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 35000 of our recent transfer on paying school fees for our two children who are in secondary school. We managed to clear their school fees for the whole term and we paid a little for next academic term. My husband who is a teacher and the one who usually pays the school fees, has thus been able to save some of the money that he makes. We plan to make other developments such as buying a calf with that saved money. Other than that, we also bought another bigger solar panel at KES 7500. The one that we have been using is small and its power is not enough to switch on the television and provide enough lighting for the children to study. With the bigger solar panel, there is thus enough lighting for the children to study since they are on holiday, and we can now watch the television since it is able to support it. With the remaining transfer amount, we used it on buying more food for our consumption. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for their big support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 9:34 a.m when I received a message from GiveDirectly that confirmed the receipt of my first transfer. I was with my sister-in-law when I got the message and on showing her, she had to also confirm her on and lucky enough she also had the same amount in her account. I called my family members, and on informing them, they received the news with great excitement since the plans that we had were great for everyone in the household.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the peace of mind after clearing school fees for my two children currently in secondary school. I am glad that I finally got a chance to pay and clear in time unlike in the previous terms where my children had been experiencing a lot of disturbances being sent home from school to collect them in the middle of the term. It is a good feeling that my husband can now direct the part of his salary that had been paying school fees to other projects before the next term starts.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After a long struggle to raise school fees fr my children, I was glad to receive support from GiveDirectly. With my two sons in secondary school at the moment, I ensured that I cleared all the KES29000 that was required for the whole term. At the moment, I feel relieved and can now concentrate on other projects that can still generate income and in turn, will boost my savings before paying for the next term. I also inject KES2400 into the poultry project that I had been running after bringing in six more chickens and KES3100 on a chain link that facilitated the expansion of the chicken coop. Even though the project is still small, I am hoping to see it grow as I had been saving a lot from the eggs I had been selling and later using the same amount to bring in more chicks. With my family of six, I also have four orphans that I had been supporting and living together making my family number go up to ten. Providing enough foodstuff had never been easy and such a great opportunity could not pass without ensuring an additional purchase of foodstuff. I spent KES8000 on two sacks of maize and a 10KES pack of rice. I am grateful for this far, and I am still looking forward to the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The thought of this transfers brightens my future. This is for the simple reason that where I have been inadequate in terms of expanding my source of income for my family will be a realized dream.I live next to Chepalungu forest. It is against this backdrop that I want to take advantage of the resource because it will provide me with free pasture.I intend to purchase a dairy cow worth KES 35000 and the rest of the money will be used to do finishing for my house which has stalled for sometime now.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Our second-born son got admitted to a national school, Kericho High school. That were the highest moments for our family. We celebrated a lot because he beats all the odds and triumph. Earlier on he had been an average student but his sterling performance took us by surprise. We were so happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I take care of two orphans and adding up my family members is a challenge fending up for them especially in paying school fees. The school calendar is now too short because it was disrupted by Covid 19 pandemic. Schools close for just a week, with schools, almost going on throughout I do not get enough time to look for fees. I have pending arrears for last term as we speak.
