How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My dream has always been to have a livestock rearing project, specifically focusing on goats, which are well suited to our local climate and survive well in our conditions, unlike cows, which need more grassy fields. To achieve this goal, my plan for this year is to set aside a portion of the transfers that I will be receiving from GiveDirectly and use it to buy goats every month. I am hopeful that these goats will multiply and increase in number and value so that in the future I may be able to sell them and use the proceeds to help my family as well as my younger siblings and children who are still in school. My goal is to have a sustainable stream of income that I will be able to rely on, especially when this program comes to an end. I am hopeful that I will be able to achieve my dreams despite the drought challenge that we are currently facing in our region.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Currently, our region is facing a hard time where we did not receive enough rains as we had anticipated and our farms yielded nothing, exposing us to hunger. To ensure that my family does not go hungry, I had to spend $26 of my recent transfers to buy food. I am happy to say that with this financial support, we are able to sustain ourselves through this difficult time. Additionally, my younger sister had been sent home due to unpaid school fees. My parents, who are jobless, did not have any money to give her to go back to school, and this made me very sad. Lucky enough, the transfers came in at that particular time she had been sent home, and therefore I paid $34 for her school fees so that she could go back to school and focus with her education. I also spent another $34 to buy a goat and add to the ones that I have in order to achieve my dreams of becoming a livestock farmer. My hope is that these goats will multiply and increase in number and value so that in the future I may be able to sell them and support my family. Lastly, my young daughter was unwell, and I had to spend the remaining $8 to take her to the hospital so that she could get the necessary medication that was required. I am excited that she is now doing better and grateful for the assistance that is being given to us.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My primary aim is to establish a livestock rearing project, specifically focusing on goats and sheep, which are well-suited to our local climate. To achieve this, I am committed to setting aside a portion of my monthly transfers, approximately $20, with the goal of commencing the project by the end of September and each goat or sheep typically ranges in price from $50 to $80

I hail from a low-income background, where my father, the sole provider, is currently unemployed. This situation has placed a heavy burden on me, as I must work tirelessly to feed our family. The financial strain has been particularly challenging, leading to difficulties in paying my youngest sister's school fees as she completes her final year of secondary education. With these money, I was able to settle $25 of my sister's school fees, enabling her to return to school. Additionally, I used the remaining $9.70 to purchase food for my family. The support came at a crucial time, and I am truly grateful for it.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My intention is to allocate my upcoming transfers towards acquiring livestock, with the plan to raise and subsequently sell them at a profitable margin. This strategic investment is geared towards securing my future, recognizing that the multiplication of the livestock will require time. Additionally, in the event of an unforeseen financial emergency, the option to sell the livestock stands as a practical solution to address my immediate needs. The invaluable financial support from the transfers has been instrumental, providing crucial assistance during challenging financial times.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When my younger sister needed to cover a substantial amount of school fees to resume her studies, I provided her with $30 to ensure continuity in her education. During the festive season, I allocated $34 towards food expenses as my extended family came together to celebrate and enjoy quality time. Additionally, I made a prudent investment by purchasing four hens for a total of $15, foreseeing the potential for future income as they multiply. The remaining $22 was directed towards acquiring essential personal items, including toiletries, which greatly contribute to enhancing our family's daily life. The invaluable transfers I've received have played a pivotal role in supporting my family during this period, especially as I await employment as a clinical officer in the government.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My primary objective is to expand my livestock operation in response to the challenging climatic conditions in my area that have rendered traditional farming less productive. Having initiated my venture with chickens and goats a few months ago, my goal is to continue and enhance this endeavor into a larger-scale project. To achieve this, I am committed to be setting aside $15 from my monthly income, which will allow me to purchase additional livestock every two months, steadily incre
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am grateful for the timely assistance provided by GiveDirectly, which significantly eased the challenges we were facing during the harvesting season. With the money I received, I allocated $15 for transportation, which greatly facilitated the process of bringing the harvest from the fields to our home. Additionally, I used $13 to reduce my younger sibling's outstanding school fees balance, ensuring that their education would continue uninterrupted. The remaining $6.70 was wisely spent on purchasing essential food items and other necessities for my family. GiveDirectly's support not only relieved our immediate financial burdens but also had a positive and lasting impact on our overall well-being.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My primary goal is to help my brother. He is in form three now, and I desire to see him complete his O'level. Because our parents cannot raise his school fee, I will always raise his fees from my monthly transfers. When he completes form four, I hope to be free to devote more time to my young family. Afterward, I plan to keep goats as an alternative venture for my family. I contemplate this because I hope it will be beneficial to us in future. Even after the transfers, I will be able to gain from that venture.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Although I am a clinical officer, I do not have a formal job. I occasionally do casual jobs to support my family. Since my parents are advanced in age, they cannot take part in any income-generating activity. Consequently, I am always responsible for my brother's school fee payments. Therefore, when I received my recent transfer, I spent $25 to pay his school fees. He is in form three now. I am glad that he has been doing well in school. Because we did not have adequate food for our family of 11 members, I also used $9 to supplement foodstuff for the family.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am a trained Clinical Officer but currently unemployed. I have been surviving on stipends and handouts from doing voluntary work. I have two siblings in high school who depend on me for their fees. I am solely relying on the monthly transfers for their school fees. My objective currently is to ensure that I pay for their fees on time so that they can continue with their studies and achieve their goals. Also, if their is surplus, I am planning to buy more goats to keep. I currently have 2 goats which will also help me in case of a future financial need.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The past three cash transfers have proved useful, especially in paying school fees, acquiring food, and buying livestock. I used the first and second cash transfers worth $30 each to reduce tuition fee debts for my two siblings in high school. The debts had accrued over two academic terms, consequently making my siblings miss classes as they were sent home to fetch the balances. Gratefully, after I started paying the fee, they have never been pulled out of class. I spent the most recent transfer on shopping for Christmas and New Year festivities; I bought my ten-month daughter a dress worth $5 and spent $29 on foodstuff. Am glad at how the money boosts the little I make as a part-time clinical officer and helps me provide for my family with less strain than before. Though my greatest struggle, after graduating from college in 2019 has been securing permanent employment, I believe the financial support I receive from Give Directly will help care for my family while I find a job.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I have nothing but praises when it comes to the work that I've seen the organization doing so far. Through the transfers we have been able to cater for our day-to-day needs which has really improved our lives as compared to before where we living in utter poverty.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Ever since I got introduced to the organisations and got lucky enough to get enrolled I have been quite excited. This is because back at home I am among the people who are mostly relied upon and at times it is quite strenuous because I do not have job. Unfortunately this time around I decided to use KES 2,000 from the transfers I had received and paid tuition for two of my siblings because they had been home for over a week. Later on I was left with a balance of KES 1,000 which I decided to demosit in my savings account because I planned on investing in my farm.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At the time I confirmed the receipt of my transfer I felt good and happy. I was financially down when I received my transfer, and that made me feel so happy. I knew that I would be able to offer the needed support to my brothers who had been sent home from school. I was just alone and had gone to the shop to buy food for supper. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the timely support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
From the time I received the transfer, the greatest difference in my life is being able to pay off school fees for my brothers who had been sent home. Currently, they have been concentrating well on their studies. I feel good having participated in helping them to advance with their studies. This convinced me that with continuous support, I will be in a position to offer better help.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Immediately after I received my transfer, I spent KES 3,000 on paying school fees for my two brothers who are currently in High School. Among my siblings, I am the only one who has some sources of livelihood. Therefore I always step in to support more when the need arises. However, at the time transfer was sent, I had not received my weekly wages thus prompting me to use it to support the duo who had been sent home due to accumulated fee arrears. I am glad that they have been able to focus on their studies. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for that kind of support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My mother used to tell me education is the key as well as the path towards future success and I have lived believing in this. She did whatever she could to ensure that I finish my studies so that I can help her in educating my two younger siblings. Since I graduated three years ago, I have not been employed. I depend on locum jobs getting daily stipend of 1000KES which is not frequently distributed within a month making it difficult to raise school fees for my brother and sister who are currently in secondary school. The GiveDirectly transfers will help in solving this challenge. Since both my wife and I are enrolled, my 3 000 KES transfers will all be directed towards paying school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
A friend of mine contacted me about four months ago requesting if I could temporarily take his position as he was taking a month break. The opportunity came when I was broke and my wife had delivered. It goes without saying that it was my most marvelous moment I have lived to recall. The daily stipend I received for a whole month boosted us in many ways including providing food and paying school fees for my siblings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Among those counted as educated in my family, I am on the top of the list. Trained as a clinical officer, my family (both close and extended) knew life was going to be better. Three years have gone without formal employment. I rely on locum with sometimes going for a whole week without a call. Providing for my family is a challenge and the situation has worsen since we have a small baby, four months old who consistently needs cash for diapers, clothing and special diet. Looking at my house which I started building two years ago stalled adds the hot nail on the wound.
